    Advice Please: Hubby's Christmas Present

Wow, what a difference a year makes. Things have changed so much in the last year. I have my husband home again (he was a trucker and gone for 3 weeks at a time) and I can actually think about getting him a decent present for Christmas. So here's my thinking and I need some input please.

Hubby used to play golf years ago. He's expressed an interest in taking it up again so I thought about getting him another set of clubs and doing some kind of cool, colorful reference book of all the muni courses in our area. Now I know that golf is an expensive hobby but is there anything wrong with the Wilson set of starter clubs? He had clubs but loaned him to his son, who is no longer speaking to hubby, so I figure the clubs are long gone.

    Thoughts?

Sounds like a good plan, Granny. Can't speak for your area of Texas, but many towns have public courses that I've heard are relatively inexpensive plus I understand driving ranges are fun too and don't cost much either. Great that you are enjoying hubby being home more - I bet he's glad to be off the road too!

Oh there's a plethora of nice municipal courses here, that's the good part. But I'm wondering will he be happy with a set of starter clubs 'cuz I can't afford much more than that?

And something else that popped into my head....he doesn't have friends that play....in fact he doesn't have friends (said but true). Who's he gonna play with? Can the courses match him up with other fellows or is there a way to meet others who are interested in the sport.

I know very little about the sport, except what I learned in my college p.e. class, but I'm guessing it's not like walking up to the pool table in bar and plopping down your two quarters for the next game on the table.

We really do need to get out more don't we?

He's enjoying it a lot more than he thought he would. He's with the grandkids a lot more, even though he's working nights and he really enjoys spending time with them. And he's actually getting some things done around here that were long neglected. Now he deserves some play time.

I am not very good at golf but another option could be a gently used nice set? If he is good or has played a lot of golf sometimes a starter set may not be the way to go. Maybe one of the courses in your area has sets for sale or a BK auction

I agree, my husband has a set that was his grandfathers. He never golfs, he may go out occasionally to the shooting range but it isn't really his "thing". We tried to sell them (they didn't sell and we still have them) but it's a great idea.

My hubby and I started out with a set of Affinity clubs that came with the bag and covers for $200 from Dicks sporting goods. Eight years later we still have most of them. Dh broke two drivers in half. (He hits a pounding 250-300 yard drive shot, he is a nut job) and has since upgraded to a gently used Taylor Made set but they are still mostly fine. He asked for Ben Hogan set, but I DONT THINK SO!!!! He rarely goes anymore anyhow. To expensive. He has a net in the backyard to *play with*.
My DH is a total loner and nearly always golfs alone or with our daughter. Its a sport thans fine alone. Almost spiritual for the hardcores to the point where others annoy them.
