    I got a "pre-approved" visa. LOL

I got some mail today that actually made me laugh. Keep in mind that I'm 6 months out from my discharge..... I look at the outside of this envelope from ESPN and it says "Congratulations! You are pre-approved for a credit card for up to $7,500!!" I giggle to myself and think ok, let's see what they have to say. These "pre-approvals" are not really a pre-approval but basically just a teaser to get you to apply. I open the envelope and start reading all the disclosures. Not bad, 14.99%, no annual fee, 0% for the first year. I'm shocked. I think, who in the hell would give me credit??? I do some more searching/reading and find that the card is backed by WAMU. Now I really start laughing, my girlfriend gives me a funny look, and the dogs run away. Remember that I just was discharged 6 months ago and I'll give you 3 guesses, the first 2 don't count, about who was one of the creditors that was included in my discharge. Yep, you guessed it WAMU.

I threw the offer in the trash.

You should have sent in back just to mess with them.

Way back before I was married, my soon-to-be wife had pretty poor credit. She got a job in the mail room of a large finincial company that had been bought out by American Express. At some point they began to switch the name of the company to American Express Finincial Advisors and they offered employees American Express cards and they would waive the fee. Well, my wife applied and was turned down due to her bad credit!

It wasn't too many months later that a pre-approved offer arrived in the mail from American Express and she sent it in -- she ended up getting the card!

As an employee she was an unacceptable credit risk, but as a stranger from off the street she got the pre-approved card!

Also, one of her credit cards had been charged off before we were married. I forgot the name, but we ended up getting a pre-approved offer from them at some point and sent that in too. Amazingly, they opened the account but started with a nearly useless $500 credi line.

The pre-approved offers can be kind of screwy but they've been legitimate in our case.
Discharged November 2008 100 days after filing no-asset Chapter 7. We intended to let a two-year-old vehicle go back to the bank and reaffirm an inexpensive ten-year-old SUV and our home mortgage. In the end we surrendered ALL of our vehicles and reaffirmed NOTHING. We'll "ride through" our mortgage after the court ruled it an undue hardship.

Believe it or not, I did send it in just to see what would happen. I figure one credit inquiry right now isn't gonna hurt anything. Guess what... I got approved for a $1,000 credit line. I don't believe it. I really don't. I'm gonna read, reread, and reread again the disclosures just to make sure I didn't miss anything.

      There is life after BK.
