    I was robbed

Somebody stinking broke into my van last night and stole my purse and laptop. I know - stupid to leave stuff like that in a car. I had gotten home really late last night and was just thinking about getting my kids to bed. I live in a small town about 2 blocks away from the polics station. Talk about false sense of security. The theft is screwing me up but the thieves sure aren't going to get much out of it. I have no credit cards, no cash at all in the purse, my laptop is from work and has really good security on it so they can't do any more than turn it on unless they find some computer genius to hack around it. I had some teaching books and papers in my computer bag and my certificate of bankruptcy class completion (I was going to mail that out today). Maybe they'll feel sorry for me and give [B]me[B] some money
Jerks - they totally through me off and it's all for nothing.
I'm trying to look at the good side of this (if there is one!?) I get paid tomorrow and I'm going to the cash envelope system. It's a good thing I learned my lesson now when there wasn't as much to lose.

Sorry to hear about this...luckily the laptop is owned by the employer...what's thier policy on damage/theft incurred by employees who are issued laptops? If the thieves can't hack through the security, they will just replace the HD, etc to access the computer, and sell it.

The bright side of this is they left your van. Seriously. About 4 years ago I had stuff stolen out of my car. When I realized that my first thought was, "Hey, atleast they left the car. The other stuff is replaceable."

And as for your work laptop, that's insured and will be replaced. I just hope there's no sensitive information on it. Hacking into a laptop is, actually, relatively easy.

The problem with working laptop I see is... once/if data get lost, employer do not trust employee anymore... possible warnings, notices, reprimands, or even disciplines could result... please read recent news on some US veteran adminstrators let their employees carrying personal/sensitive data on laptop home and get lost to thieves then you will know more...

            I was robbed

            My car has been stolen.
My house has been robbed, was gone for about 30 minutes and I walked in on them doing it.
I have been mugged where my wallet was stolen from my pocket.
My wallet has been robbed from my car.
My small PC with vital info and addresses has been stolen.
            My tools have been stolen.
Two bikes have been stolen. Once at knife point as an adult and once as a child leaving it in the drive.
My class ring and camcorder was stolen.
Three guys robbed my duffle bag at knife point.
I was mugged another time outside the bank while taking in 300.00 cash to deposit.
My mom has been robbed twice, once at gun point.

My identity has never been stolen. My intergrity has never been stolen.

Today, I wont leave a dime, maps, or anything of value in my car that can be seen through the window as it will eventually be stolen. Credit cards stay at home unless I am going to be using it on my trip, then they go right back into hiding.

It is an aweful AWEFUL feeling, that never goes away.

cathywhite4495, you might get the laptop back if you made a police report. Do make one if you have not. Sometimes these thugs just want those things to sell to a pawn shop for a few bucks for drugs and not all criminals are interested in the data. It will depend on what they intend on doing with it.
I did recover a few things after my house was robbed and they were at a pawn shop.

Bandit - Geez! I think I would give up and go live in a cave!
My laptop has a lot of stuff on it that's important to me but I don't think a thief would care a lot. I doubt they would mess with trying to get around the security. With the exception of the work I did last night, all my data is on our server so I won't lose anything. My bosses are awesome. They were more worried about me and how I was doing than the laptop. We are a close community.
I grew up in the city and finally left the Detroit area about 10 years ago to move to the country. I have never had anything stolen from me in all that time - I guess I let my guard down after so much time. I did hear today that there has been a sudden rash of these break-ins. That's actually good news in a way because the idiot is more likely to get caught.
But...bottom line is nobody got hurt and everything can be replaced. I learned an important lesson today!!

I had my flute and jewelry stolen in school once, it was so hurtful because I inherited the flute and the necklace was given to me by my BIL who had ben killed right weeks before as a gift. Karma to them who do such things.
Two little nine year old stinkers got my freinds and in Atlantic city once. Little thugs had a knife!

Robbing??? I had the stereo stolen out of my Jeep years ago.

About 15 years ago, someone broke into our house (I was 15 and living with parents) and we came home to find our computer on the floor in pieces. I thought it was odd. Wouldn't have been easier just to take the computer than to sit there and "dig" for a part they wanted?? I'll never understand that.

Also, about 10 years ago, we had someone enter our house while we were away. Again, they didn't take anything. They did play on the game system we had and let our ferrets out of their cages, though. I'm sure it was just neighborhood kids. Actually, when we first moved into that house, someone would enter your car if it was unlocked and line the pennies up on the dashboard. They didn't take anything, but about 5 people had the same pennies/coins thing happen.

That is HORRIBLE! I am guilty of ALWAYS leaving my purse in the car and most of the time my car is unlocked, but I never have any money, so nobody would get anything anyway. I live in the country and I guess I never worry about it. I am so sorry that happened to you.

That happened to me also. I know who did that this theft. I was so mad when I saw all the wires ripped out, my stereo, amp and speakers gone. Punks.
I grew up too trusting of people and I think people targeted me that way.
It has been over a decade since I stopped trusting people like I used to and nothing like any of this has happened for about 10 years. But it still can, I know.

My first night in my first apartment I came home to find that someone had broken into my bedroom window and stolen my jewelry and electronics. Being the naive 18 y.o. that I was I never missed a beat!! Five years later the SAME EXACT thing happened!!! I later learned that it was probably a drug addicted family member that had done it both times!! Can't know it for sure, but it was the same exact "crime" in two completely different locations. Same exact things stolen. Very suspsicious...... I had insurance the second time around. Now I live 3000 miles away.
