Check the Dog/Cat Food for Potential Poisoned Recalled Foods

Our cat is sick. Deathly ill.

It started on Thursday, March 1. He threw up right at bedtime. We'd had a stomach bug going around. And you know our pets catch things from us. So we waited to see if that's what it was.

Couple days later, he seemed to be getting better. Then he quit eating and drinking. So Friday, March 9th, I took him to the Vet. He has a bad tooth that cannot be removed due to his age. If they sedate him for surgery, the anesthesia may kill him so they won't remove the tooth. The Vet did a physical exam and suspected it was a bacterial infection.

The Vet gave our cat sub-cutaneous fluids for dehydration. Our cat also got a shot of long acting penicillin with a B vitamin to spur his appetite. The Vet suggested pushing his favorite food to spur him to eat. We also got antibiotic liquid to give him orally for 10 days at home. By Monday, our cat was much better.

It didn't last. By Thursday, he was only drinking the gravy of his favorite Duck with Wild Rice pouch food. Yesterday, he wouldn't eat at all. There's blood in the litter box from the last 2 times he urinated and he can hardly walk. I tried calling our Vet's office today, but they don't have an Emergency service. Tried calling other Vets too. Same thing.

Hubby was checking the "Headlines" today when he came across this story:

    http://www.breitbart.com/article.php...show_article=1

One manufacturer makes cat and dog foods for many of the various labels/brands available.

This is recall for canned and pouch type foods that contain sauces and/or gravies. Dry foods are not affected.

To check to see if you may have purchased a potentially contaminated food product for your cat or dog, check out the recall list at this website:

    http://www.menufoods.com/recall

Our cat's favorite food is on the list of recalled foods.

SF, I am so sorry! What a terrible emotional blow to endure after everything else you and your family have had to shoulder this year. We lost our wonderful 15-year-old kitty to gradual kidney failure last fall about two months after we filed (not food related like yours) - we were devastated. I pray that your sweet kitty pulls through.

I wonder if this company, Menu Foods, can be held responsible for the pet deaths that have resulted from their mistake?

My thoughts are with you and your feline family member. I hope he will pull through this and recover. I'm an "animal person" and know how tough something like this is, made worse by whatever went wrong and contaminated all of this product and is wreaking havoc for pet owners. Truly best wishes to you.

We went thru a similar loss to yours, Lrprn, with our female cat. 5 years ago.

She had a seizure. I took her to the Vet. They kept her over night, ran all sorts of tests, and ran up a $700 Vet/Hospital bill. Told us she was in renal failure. I got the special food, bags of saline with tubing and needles. We did the sub cutaneous fluids injections at home. She lasted about another month before she died.

Of course now, we don't have the funds to pay for all the tests and such. When I took him in Friday, the Vet could only speculate without blood work and other tests for an accurate diagnosis.

Even tho I keep telling myself he IS an animal,.......... He's my Baby!! I have always been his person. He's always slept with me. During the day, he naps on my side of the bed or he'll curl up in my clothes in the hamper. He used to steal my socks and play with them in the middle of the night.

We've taken care of each other when ever one is sick. When I ruptured a disc and had back surgery,......... He sat up with me at night, walked the floor with me, napped with me. When he's been sick, I've always taken care of him and made it all better. And now, I can't "fix it" for him.

I don't know if the food made him sick or not.

I just wanted others to know so they can check their stocks at home. Be aware and on the look out for those brands and label codes.

Got home saturday and all the dog food cans were in a brown "don't use... kidney failure" bag. So, guess it's true. In this country pets are family as you can see by my Avatar.

            Although petless at this time....

...I am so sorry to hear of those of you whose animals are suffering due to this situation. I say, sue the b*stards! Pets are considered members of the family....and these are the biggest names in pet food....you can't trust anything anymore...It's like why don't they just give us our cyanide pills now...I'm totally infuriated!

I pray your kitty pulls through this. I know how emotionally attached you can become to a pet. I had a dog for 21 years, lost her a few weeks before my wedding..........darn near post-poned it. I was so heart sick. Best wishes for a recovery. Thank you so much for posting this information the more we inform each other the better we are. You may have saved a pet life.

Oh no, Im so sorry. This is a disgrace. My sisters labrador is sick as well. He is on an IV. I have only ever used purina one dry food although they would all prefer can food. My sister used 'old roy' can and pouch cat food though!
They had better take responsibilty however, that wont help those family fuzzies lost.

BTW there was an infant formula recall before for something really toxic. Albertsons brand I think.

Thanks for this information. I ran to the garage where I keep my dog food and to the basement to check the cat food. My brands are not on this list but I'm glad for the heads up. We have 7 dogs and 2 cats and there is not a one that I would ever give up. (I do have a favorite Golden Retriever, though I could never let the others know.

I hope your kitty is ok.

This has been one of THE longest days of my life.

I called the Vet this morning and they didn't have an appointment time available. They were all backed up. But because our Tom was so sick, the Tech told me to bring him in anyway. They would keep him and the Vet would work him in at some point.

Before noon, the Vet called. The news was not good. She said our Tom was too far gone. She thought IF he could recover, he probably would not have much, if any, quality of life. She suggested we consider putting him down.

We didn't want him to suffer any more. The last couple of weeks have been pretty bad. Just a couple of decent days. So we called the Vet back and made an appointment time for our last visit with him.

The Vet's office was really nice about the whole thing. They gave us a private room and time alone to visit with him. We both spent some time holding him and petting him and talking to him. Then I held him while Hubby went to ask if it was OK for me to be with him during the "procedure".

Back when we got our cats, they'd been born to people who did not want them. Someone drove down our road one Friday night and threw them out of the car. He came into the world with people who did not want him. I did not want him leaving the world that way.

Our Tom nestled on my chest with his head in the crook of my neck. I told him I couldn't "fix it" this time but we weren't gonna make him suffer any longer. That he was going cross Rainbow Bridge and be with his sister. The Vet and a Tech came in. While I held him, they gave him his shot.

Our faithful friend of 21 years and valued member of our family passed away quietly and peacefully in my arms.

My 2 babies had experienced some symptoms but we hadn't kept them long on those products now causing problems THANK GOODNESS. I will say we've spent about $2500 in vet bills the past several months since we got them in Dec/Jan. But they are worth every pennie. I hope yours pulls through, how does one sue the company? I'm thinking of seeking some kind of reimbursement for some of the vet bills!

SF, I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved kitty. We are all grieving with you today and for the hard days to come as you will be missing Tom so very much.

We also lost our much-loved cat, Spoons, to kidney failure after months of home treatment (IV fluids under the skin, meds to keep his potassium under control, etc - we couldn't afford lab work either). When it became obvious that his quality of life was decreasing rapidly, our vet made the same recommendation to put him down. Spoons died peacefully in my arms last July, about six weeks after we filed Ch13. My heart was completely broken and I thought I would never be able to love another cat again, ever.

Then a few months ago, my daughter was sitting on our front porch on a cold, rainy night and heard a faint meow. A young orange tabby jumped up on our porch and starting loving on my daughter. He had no collar and had obviously been outside and not eating well for a few weeks. She opened our front door and he scampered right in! We watched the papers and the neighborhood for 'lost cat' signs for several weeks in case he was lost and someone was trying to find him - nothing. Since he was a year old and had never been neutered, our kitty vet thought that he was probably not cared for very well by his first owners and then had been abandoned to fend for himself.

I know it's silly, but it's almost like Mr. Moo knew we were ready to fall in love with another cat again, so he found us on that rainy night and adopted our family all by himself. He has been with us since that night, and despite my fears, we've grown to love him as much we loved our other two beloved angel cats, Tigger and Spoons. Sometimes life gives us a precious gift just when we really need one most - Mr. Moo has been ours.

I pray for you that if/when the time is right, fate will send another precious kitty your way for you to love. Until then, treasure the memories of Tom. He was so very lucky to have lived such a long and satisfying life with a family who loved him so completely.

SF - So sorry to hear about the loss of your "baby". When you have had one as long as you have - 21 years and my "girl" was 24..... they are totally a part of your family and have a huge place in your heart.......

I feel for you today....... and I will in future days to come, as you will surely miss the little one.....

One of mine (24) slept on my shoulder evey night of my life (stretched out from shoulder to hip - started that as a kitten.... I still sleep in the same position and my hand still lays on my shoulder where I use to pet her. She used to snuggle her nose under my ear lobe. And yes, I still miss that.......... I still miss her mom I had for 17 years......

It was years before I got another pet my heart was so broken...... Only this time I got my "girls" (my avatar) at the local dog pound. I could not get another kitten for some reason...... so I rescued the "girls" off death row....

I still love cats just as much, just haven't found one that wants to love me back yet..... then it will have a home forever..... just like my girls......

Take each day as it comes, remember your baby fondly....... and know that you gave it a good life.... and it knew it was loved.... and the best part - IT TOTALLY LOVED YOU.......

The only sad part about all of this is that it was caused by the carelessness of a food company...

I can bet if breeders lost expensive show cats and kittens, there will be some lawsuits involved with this......

Have you good cry - it's coming and it's for your baby - then wake up tomorrow and say - gosh I miss her.... and think of all the pleasure that you brought each other every day............

                            Hang in there SF,

                            Minny

SF I am sooo sorry about your kitty. When my kitty Nermal goes, I have sworn to never have another cat in the house. No one could ever live up to her, the only cat I ever knew that didn't like tuna but would mugg you for your ravioli or spaghetti.
