This is why I am back in school for nursing. The business world sucks! No one has any common decency today. Same thing has happened here many times and I am tired of the same old song and dance. At least (hopefull) I will be entering a field where there is strong demand. Although the classes are killing me.

Jane, hang in there, it's tough but its gotta get better. Also the idea of selling your home. That is something alot of people are thinking of doing. Energy and maintenance costs are just getting too high. My mom is in Florida and she is telling me about the escalating costs of her insurance. It is insanity!

Jane, so sorry to hear you are having such a tough time in the job market. I think we are the generation who believed that we'd be on easy street with our college degrees - so not true! I had to job hunt four years ago when I was 50 years old - you would think everyone thought brains died at 40! What ever happened to the value of experience and maturity??

Hang in there - times will look up again before you know it. And your hubby is 100% right - try not to be so hard on yourself, ok? You are a wonderful person and we can all tell that from how supportive and sympathetic you are to all of us here. Hope we are doing the same for you as you've done so many times for many of us!

You are so right, lrprn! I thought that since I had two degrees with awesome GPA's that I'd be on easy street. It is just not so. There are no guarantees in this world, that's for sure.

Thanks, y'all! I held up pretty well yesterday and am able to realize that there is something better out there. Like I've said before although I'm not a "religious" person per se, I do have faith in God that He will provide.

I also know that God and I are NOT on the same timetable yet

I can't thank y'all enough for the moral support and words of wisdom. It means so much!!!

I hate the word "overqualified". I've asked employers why I didn't get an interview where it was obvious that I was definitely a candidate for one. I hear "with your work experience and multiple degrees we knew ahead of time that we couldn't afford you, or, if you accepted the job, you'd only stay until something better came along."

its the govt turning a blind eye... to them the $800 is free money for you to put toward your chap 13, to you, that $800 is bread and butter, they do not care nor do they actually see it that way.

depends on what college degrees, and time in history..I know with
confidence, that I can get a 2 year degree in this certain field
and start off making 30k a year, within 1-2 years, I would be
making 50k if i was willing to move...I know this because the
demand for this field is very very high...but whos to say it will
not plunge within 6-18 months, which can cause that 2 year degree to
be almost worthless if that particular job field is no longer able to hire...

I drove a semi for 10 years, decided to leave that, went to pharmacy
tech program, now i cant even find a simple pharmacy tech position,
I feel that $12,000 has just gone to waste... but if i were to have investigated this futher, then I would have saw that pharmacy tech
was not a good thing to go for, unless you are going to become a
pharmascist, most dont, then it is pretty much a dead end job...
but since I do not have a job, then for me, its a no job...

people should not go to college for what they want, others are doing the
exact same thing, and the market is flooded, a person needs to go
to college for something that is less-desirable for people, but has
a nice income because it is less desireable... Computers would not be the way to go...certain health fields would be the way to go...

You're not being very optimistic here, are you? People SHOULD go to college for what they want. If a person has a desire for a certain career, then that person should go all out when persuing that career. Yeah, maybe nothing will happen fresh out of college, but good things come to those who wait, and I'd like to add, for those who work for it. Just because we go to college doesn't mean it's going to be a cake walk. You've gotta earn whats rightfully yours. I went to college for mechanical engineering, but I didn't land that dream job just after "graduation". I started out at a small company as a quality control technician for a machine shop. It was great exposure to machining of parts and machinery itself. Then, I was offerd a position as a draftsman. This was nothing more than dimensioning parts. Not sexy, but it was the experience that I needed. Well, here I am 12 years later and I am a machine design engineer for a great company that has been in business since 1895. It took me 12 years to get this far, and it was totally worth every effort and the wait.

Paying your "dues" in your chosen field does eventually have its rewards - its just often "backbreaking" to get to that point in your life..... Seems likes its always "outta reach"......

I feel really sorry for folks that have only one skill, or one trade to rely on......like auto workers in factories..... Factory shuts down, they are almost doomed to loose everything. Yes, they make good money as long as the factory stays open (but these days they all head overseas)....... creating lines of unemployed and unskilled laborers that can't find jobs......

Towns in the North are becoming "ghost towns" that were once booming auto plants, coal mines, etc........ People are driving further and further to find jobs, and thier income goes out in gasoline.....

Companies are cutting health care, 401K's, benefits....... or no benefits at all.... Yet, they want you to give 100% to them in effort, time, energy.

If your over 40 - your ancient history in the job market. Even the federal Govt has an age limit of 37 on many of their positions....... (thats so you can put in 20 years before retirement). IF THAT'S THE CASE - we need to "get rid" of a BUNCH of Senators and Congressman.................. who sleep thru sessions of Congress and set the guidelines for the rest of us........

Work ethics suck in most businesses..... And the work force has no "morals" any longer.... The minute an employee becomes a "liability" (because of illness, marital problems, children problems), they are politely replaced for one reason or another.....
The "family unit" is given no consideration any longer regarding employment.

Times are changing, and its not a good change.

                      My thoughts.....

                        I'm ancient history???....

...Oh my god...I just went back to work at 42! Help!

However, this is why I'm sticking in for dear life with the company I was so lucky to get in with. My property management firm is run by a woman who is giving those of us, over the age of 40 a chance! In fact, I see more people over 40 than under working for my firm. There is opportunity for advancement as well. I want to take my CAM license class in the next six months which, as with any license, would be the next step in preparation for advancement.

Minny, don't scare me! LOL! Geez, I've just about got my two years of continuous experience under my little belt! I still feel like I need a part time job but all I have left is the weekend for rest & recovery. When season hits Nov. 1st...it's going to be a madhouse for six months down here...yikes! I have the possibility to deal with 85 unit owners in the scope of my job at any given time...it does wear you out mentally...but thank god! I have a job! But no disposable income whatsoever...lucky to get gas!

Don't mean to scare ya, but its fact these days about the over 40 thing......

If a company hires older workers, they are wiser than most companies...... most older workers have no children at home, etc...... are not moving around much from job to job.... are usually more dependable, etc.... are not off on maternity leaves, school functions, sick kids, etc.....

I'm glad to know that some companies still value the experience, dependability, and knowledge that older workers offer...... these kids have to learn from someone............. for sure.....

I'm the oldest in our office.... then another woman, then the boss...... and down the line till the age of 21.....

It's amazing every day to hear "how do you do this"??????? And these are college educated kids????

If you're going to be working 40+ years of your life, it would be awfully nice if it was in a career you like (or preferentially, you love). If you want that degree, there's ways to go out and get it--don't let anything stop you.

Update or as Paul Harvey would say "the rest of the story!"

Got a call yesterday from the Clinical Director that I had worked for previously. He was so apologetic and explained that while he did have a say in the hiring, the decision was not entirely his. Apparently, there were a lot of politics there (surprise, surprise, surprise ) He told me that they hired someone who interviewed right before me that had worked there before and that I had been his first choice and that if this person doesn't work out he will call me. He also invited me to come and "do lunch or coffee."

I will follow up with him in writing definitely keep in touch. He had always been so wonderful to work for and I'm glad there is another side.

I wondered if he had just gotten into trouble by not calling and called out of guilt, but he could have sent an insincere form letter if someone had MADE him contact me.

Anyway, I feel better and he is a great contact to have in my profession.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all your moral support! It gets me through the day!

                              God bless--
