well....being born and raised in san fran cal...and spending MUCH time in oregon...(my brother still lives there)...we must NOT have been breathing the same air!!

wow....a southern conservative.... i guess that's what happen to all us ex hippies from the bay area....we've have come a LONG way from our hippy days of the protests of the 60's when in high school! to now becoming conservatives... cracks me up big time.

oh...that air use to be filled with POT...so i guess it wasn't too clean in those days..

Emphasis in the article is mine. A bit of history and reality in this opinion piece. (The author doesn't live in Oregon, btw.)

Fear-Mongering Demonizes Social Securityright-wing zealots oppose healthcare reform, tougher financial regulations, stronger workplace safety laws, policies to limit climate change, higher taxes on the rich and extension of unemployment insurance to the long-term jobless. The issues vary, but the mantra is the same: This policy will kill jobs, undermine the entrepreneurial spirit and destroy freedom.http://www.seniorcitizenjournal.com/...cial-security/

            Well played, WhatMoney.

For what it's worth I used to live in Oregon before I moved to Texas. I was also a Republican, until this year. Because I had the audacity to have my position eliminated due to greedy shareholders, I am now scum according to Republicans and their talking heads on the radio.

!@#$ them and their families too.

Ryan, where people get upset with Republicans is that they never have direct or concrete answers to the current set of problems. That goes for both "real life" and internet forums.

Example number 1: I have repeatedly asked posters on other forums who are Republican and claim to be businessmen "Exactly what are the rules and regulations that have been enacted by Obama that business owners don't like? When were they enacted? How are they going to impact your bottom line?

            Crickets.

Furthermore, since outsourcing has been taking place since 1980, what rules and regulations that were around then caused businesses to outsource? Why didn't you business owners get together and discuss this with your leaders? You know, Reagan, Bush, Bush, REPUBLICANS. You have had 30 years.

            More crickets.

Example number 2. Recently there was an interview where Repulican candidates/congressman were asked what they would do differently to stimulate the economy. Their response was elect us then we will tell you.
            Oh, okay.

Example number 3. Radio talk show hosts. In this case I will use Dennis Miller. He is actually not nearly as obnoxious as some of the others (Mark Levin). A guy called in looking for concrete answers to his concrete problem, long term unemployment and mounting bills. Miller proceeded to go on a philosophical tangent about how this is a "wonderful opportunity for this guy to reinvent himself". What? How what that work if we, en masse, decided not to pay for anything, and, instead, tried to explain to the person looking for money that "this is a wonderful opportunity for him to reinvent himself".
            Yeah, that would play. NOT.

Bottom line here. The reason you Republicans are labeled as fear mongerers is because you fail to come up with direct answers to direct questions, and concrete answers to concrete problems.

I hope you get your a$$e$ kicked in November. Maybe then you will start fixing your game instead of focusing on continued greed and exploitation of everyone and everything in sight.

I used to work and part time reside in Houston, Tx.

Who EXACTLY on the radio calls families scum who lose their jobs?
Please be specific. I know you're understandably mad/frustrated, and want to attack, but exaggerations don;t help.

Ryan, where people get upset with Republicans is that they never have direct or concrete answers to the current set of problems. That goes for both "real life" and internet forums. ..and Democrats do?
Are you saying Dems have just 'answers', or answers that actually WORK?
...answers that don;t create more problems than they solve?

Example number 1: I have repeatedly asked posters on other forums who are Republican and claim to be businessmen "Exactly what are the rules and regulations that have been enacted by Obama that business owners don't like? When were they enacted? How are they going to impact your bottom line? ..

can;t begin to speak for them, but the biz owners I know personally are not speaking about TODAY, they are future-oriented. They know that Obama has promised to let tax reductions lapse as of Jan 1, 2011. Fact.

Many are in the so-called 'Wealthy" bracket making $200,000 (single) or $250,00- (married) Most file in a manner that makes them fully vulnerable to these increases. But like all businesses, they are not sure how much the damage will be. The uncertainty of EVERYTHING is also a big factor.

You seem to be saying businesses only act at the MOMENT something happens, not when it is becoming imminent. Thats just not true. They try to act as early as possible. There are more examples than I could cite here, but if you like I'll try and list them in another post.

This is hard to understand what you;re asking? Long response would be needed here, but GLOBALIZATION is and was not about one law or regulation. It occurred as much in DEm administrations as Repub ones.
To prevent 'outsourcing' you would essentially have to nationalize all but the smallest firms in America. If laws were passed to eliminate outsourcing or make it incredibly expensive, companies would simply stop manufacturing and producing many goods here anyways, since they would be unable to sell them at the prices they would need to get.

              More crickets.

Example number 2. Recently there was an interview where Repulican candidates/congressman were asked what they would do differently to stimulate the economy. Their response was elect us then we will tell you.
              Oh, okay.

didn't see the interview, but there repubs that do put forth plans.

              Yeah, that would play. NOT.

Of all the supposed 'conservative talk shows hosts, you choose comedian Dennis Miller as your example? I'd agree, if that was his response its lame.

Bottom line here. The reason you Republicans are labeled as fear mongerers is because you fail to come up with direct answers to direct questions, and concrete answers to concrete problems.

Sorry, can't agree. The reason is because Leftists know that the big old media side with them in most of these debates. It is easier to call names, like racist, homophobic, Islamaphobic, bigot, "greedy" (as you did above) and more than put forth plans and ideas THAT ACTUALLY HAVE POTENTIAL TO WORK AND NOT CAUSE MORE HARM IN THE PROCESS.

Take Health Care 'Fix"....What kind of fantasy planet does someone have to be living on, what powerful hallucinogenic does one have to be taking,
to seriously believe that you will add 30+ MILLION to the health care system and NOT cause prices to go up? ...or wait times to skyrocket or the inevitable rationing that must occur?

I hope you get your a$$e$ kicked in November. Maybe then you will start fixing your game instead of focusing on continued greed and exploitation of everyone and everything in sight.

We shall see who gets whose ass kicked this November. I'd be happy to revisit this discussion after the election, since you brought it up. Lets see what the voters think. Thats why I have always preferred democracies.

btw, no hard feelings, I like political discussions more than beer.

And your responses are an epic fail.

You were asked direct questions and did not respond.

                  Try again.

the backbones of our young educated people...who not only graduate college and the only thing they have awaiting them...is not a job...but hefty student loans....high interest rates and bleek futures. fdr's "big deal" is really a big deal now! and it wasn't the intention of this social system to support people in their retirements...it was designed to supplement.

i have done more reading than most people had done in a lifetime on the subject matter...

i prior to going back to bu to get another degree was a financial analyst for over 25 years, working with many of these big 10's for too many years that i would like to mention. i was known for being conservative in my views and the only person's future i didn't figure correctly was our own! surprise!! JOKES on me!!! (one cannot predict illness or job loss). however, i stick strongly to what i say....the system is failing and will continue until it disappears completely. perhaps not in our lifetimes...but the present system impenetrable to it's path of distruction. extremely scary.... such propaganda ...oh! forgot it's a bi-partisan committee! how could i be so foolish.

each to it's own...it's what makes the world interesting.
tobee. I agree completely! Read the report, too. The biggest problem we face seems to be the inability of anyone in government at any level (and the legal system which drives all legislation) to analyze and assess full pros and cons of issues, to deal with intended and unintended consequences in analysis. We are in a garbage in, garbage out state, driven by greed, corruption, and ignorance of reality. The bigger the systems get, both in the public and private sectors, the less connected they become to the whole picture, with each peon acting by rote without thought.
Social security itself will continue to exist, it will simply become what it is already approaching: a transfer of money from the social security segment of the government pocket to the health care segment of the government pocket, as climbing costs of health care driven by government fiat.
