Florida leads the nation in foreclosure

    Nov. 19, 2009

Florida topped the nation in the percent of home loans in foreclosure for the third quarter of this year with banks taking back 12.74 percent of the state's mortgages.

The data, released this morning by the Mortgage Bankers Association, is part of a nationwide home loan delinquency survey.

The average percent of homes in foreclosure nationally is 4.5 percent.

Nevada, Arizona and California trailed Florida for the second, third and fourth place respectively.

"Despite the recession ending in mid-summer, the decline in mortgage performance continues," said Jay Brinkmann, MBA's chief economist. "Job losses continue to increase and drive up delinquencies and foreclosures because mortgages are paid with paychecks, not percentage point in creases in GDP."

Florida ranked second nationally for the percent of home loans that were 90 days delinquent with 6.07 percent, sandwiched between Nevada (8 percent) and Arizona (6.04 percent).

In total, more than 14 percent of American homeowners with a mortgage were either behind on their payments or in foreclosure at the end of September, a record-high for the ninth straight quarter and a problem that could threaten the economic recovery.

The Mortgage Bankers Association's report adds to fears that the housing market and broader recovery could be thwarted by the continuing surge in home loan defaults, especially as the unemployment rate keeps rising. Lost jobs, rather than the shady loans made during the housing boom, are now the main reason homeowners fall behind on their mortgages.

After three years of plunging prices, the housing market started to rebound this summer. While optimists hope the worst is over, pessimists say there are simply too many foreclosed properties that have yet to be dumped on the market and expect further price declines.

I am not surprised to see us lead the nation in foreclosure...its just a verification of what happens when property taxes and insurance and home prices all spike in a short period of time. Where did the banks, local government and insurance companies think the $$ was going to come from????

Well, no kidding, genius! This just goes to show what a lot of BS it is that this country is in "recovery" As far as our household is concerned, the recession has NOT ended, no matter what they say.

It will get worse in Florida, Small business unemployment taxes from 8$ to over $300 in some cases and it is a automatic tax!! Since so many are out of work. Small business cant afford to hire, cant afford to pay the increased tax, sooooooooooooo they close up and more people out of work and more foreclosures. Catch 22.

A number of people seemed to rush out to Florida to purchase homes. Did anyone ever stop to ask where are the Jobs going to come from? The boom that occurred in Miami had a lot to do with drugs rather than sound economics.

I remember reading a poster here say that their monthly electricity bill was close to $1k, that is just ridiculous.

The foreclosure seems to be about the same as the unemployment stats. HHHHMMMMNNNN I wonder if there is a connection. As far as employment, there is plenty around us. Yes we are in the county of the potato capital of the world and cabbage too. Check every field. Just chuck full of workers. Just drive by, wave and say Ola.

We were int he nearly 1k per month electric club. Ridiculous. That bill was 300/month ten years ago.

We have new ac untis, too. Our bill should have dropped. I think we averaged 800-900 over the summer. This is our last month or two in the house, which is 4k sq foot, and has the utility bills to prove it.

Horrible situation, glad we are almost done.

What are (were) people earning out there to be able to afford that? I would assume a household paying a $1k electricity bill would be taking home at least $250K.

Definitely a whole other argument but a good one too. That is, the flood of cheap workers from Mexico and beyond. Work that should be going to the millions of americans that are unemployed.

I agree! Not to make this about Bush especially since I do not like him, but his media turned anything good into bad news.

Obama's State run media are finding ways to put a positive spin on losing over 200k jobs a month and we all know it's more then what's being reported.

Neither! They are puppets for an even bigger bunch of thugs. Nobody is that stupid. These people know what they are doing and they are doing it all for a reason. I guess we will know once the other shoe drops who's behind the curtain controlling everything.
