US man 'shoots wife and children'

    January 27, 2009

A US man apparently distraught over job problems is thought to have shot dead his wife and five young children before turning the gun on himself.

The bodies were found in a house in the south Los Angeles suburb of Wilmington.

The man, identified as Ervin Lupoe, is believed to have killed his family after calling a local broadcaster and sending a fax about problems at work.

The broadcaster then alerted the police, who found the dead family and a revolver lying near the man's body.

Police could still smell the gunpowder residue when they found the bodies at around 0830 (1630 GMT) on Tuesday, a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) spokeswoman said.

    Christmas Eve killings

In the fax sent to KABC-TV, the man allegedly claimed he and his wife had been fired from jobs as medical technicians and she suggested they kill their children and themselves.

"Why leave the children to a stranger?" the man wrote, according to KABC.

"We have no job and five children under eight years old with no place to go. So here we are," the fax continued.

"Oh lord, my God, is there no hope for a widow's son?" it concluded.

In Southern California's third family mass murder in six months, police said the child victims were twin two-year old boys, twin five-year-old girls and an 8-year-old girl.

At a news conference, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said it was difficult to understand what could trigger such violence.

"There is no way to comprehend this unspeakable act. I dare say that no-one I know could understand what would drive anyone to take matters into their own hands in such a lethal manner.

"According to many reports the man who committed this crime recently lost his job and allowed the desperation to put him over the edge. Unfortunately, this has become an all too common story in the last few months but that does not, and should not, lead people to resort to extreme measures. Help is available. Resources exist," the mayor said.

Last month, nine people died when a gunman dressed as Father Christmas stormed into the home of his former in-laws on Christmas Eve and shot his ex-wife and her family before torching the house and killing himself.

Two months earlier, a man shot his wife, three children and mother-in-law before killing himself, apparently because of financial troubles.

I'm afraid if things don't improve in this country, we may see more tragic stories like this.

ABC Predicts Suicide Rates Will Go Up, Just Like During Great Depression

'Good Morning America' reports rise in health problems thanks to financial stress, but piles on with another Depression reference. Are people's financial burdens stressing them to the point where they might kill themselves? ABC warned that they could be.

“Good Morning America” did a segment titled “Recession Depression” on June 10. Reporter Chris Cuomo explained personal finances have people so stressed, they are developing health problems. But he didn’t leave the report there.

“The link between financial troubles and psychological problems is well documented,” he said. “In the U.S. the seminal example is the Great Depression, when the suicide rate jumped from 14 to 17 for every 100,000 Americans,” stated Cuomo. “And today, with the threat of recession looming large, the price we pay physically may skyrocket as well.”

Despite the fact that the economy is nowhere near the terrible state it was in during the Depression, ABC continued to make comparisons between the two. The Business & Media Institute has documented this trend in network reports – comparing 2008 with the economy that followed the stock market crash of 1929. One example of the contrast between now and then is the unemployment rate – though it jumped to 5.5 percent most recently, at the height of the Depression it was close to 25 percent.

This time, ABC used the reference to suggest that suicide rates will increase. “A rising tide of distress is going to be manifest in mental health problems, suicide rates, heart disease,” said Dr. Redford Williams.

About 20 minutes after reporting the “threat of recession looming large,” Cuomo actually reported the economy may be looking up despite a “weak” job market. “Turn now to the economy where the news is not all bad. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says the danger of a substantial economic downturn has faded, thanks to reforms in the financial markets and strong exports.”

Lets hope the people in Washington don't screw this up.

I was waiting for BP to post this article.

I am sorry, but although financial problems might be an added issue, these people have way deeper problems to be able to point a gun at 5 babies and shoot them.

Without a doubt. This is heartbreaking.

I agree. I've battled depression paranoia and anxiety throughout my life and would be lying if I said I never thought about ending it at times. But never have I thought of taking people with me for their own good. That mentality simply escapes me.

The History Channel had something on about the Depression. I hadn't seen those newsreel images in a long time. This was very common back then too. This and total abandonment of family.
Much thanks for all the support and information I receive on this forum.

This is by far the saddest story I've read in a very long time. I wonder why soliciting help from relatives or charitable organizations wasn't an option. If I knew about their recent job losses, I would have gladly send a few dollars to help them (as would many many others).

I can understand why these people did what they did, it is just sad. There is no money for health care and surely there is no money for mental health in this country. Maybe society will start to learn.

This is very sad that the man felt he could turn no where's else. We as a society as a whole have become so addicted to stuff that we cannot bear the thought of life without stuff. I'm sure there would have been assistance for the necessities of life had they sought such, but to take ones life and ones children's lives is selfish.

As the economic times get worse it is likely this will become more common sadly.

Some people, when cornered, will do strange things. As the economy continues to falter, I expect we will see even stranger things. Just the signs of the times. After a while, incidents like this will not even bother people.

Desperate people do desperate things. It's tragic. And yes we'll see more of this- there have been reports locally of elderly people - having been scammed into refinancing their houses to release equity and lost their retirement fund now - seeing no way out have shot themselves. the human cost of all this will be enormous - I hope the banks are enjoying their bail out- its Joe public who is getting squeezed unmercifully, as usual.

Some people just over dose and I suspect a lot of them do not show up as sucides.
