Times must be hard – Americans are buying Spam again

    #2
LOL! My hubby has always loved grilled Spam sandwiches. However, the sodium and fat content is just beyond...In bad times people go to the cheaper foods which are high in fat and sodium content - it's a real shame not only for their health but for the future health of their children eating all that stuff now.

Cant speak to the fat, but they do have a lower sodium version available. I keep Spam. We like to have it every now and then for Saturday lunch. I love an occasional spam sandwich with mustard and american cheese.

Maybe we should all post our favorite Spam recipe. The ones that are willing to admit they actually eat Spam.

Here's mine, the family LOVES it! This is the only way they will eat spam.

          Spam Hotdish

Boil 1 lb of elbow macaroni

          Cube 1 can of Spam

Dump 1 med sized can of tomato sauce, cubed Spam, and 2 cups of mozzerella cheese in with the macaroni and stir. Put in a cake pan or other baking dish, cover with 1 cup of mozzerella cheese and bake for 30 min at 350 degrees.

It will feed my entire family of 5 and there will be leftovers.

Spam is nasty but it is not a bad item to keep on your shelf for emergency or hard times. One I used to like as a kid that is kind of like spam is potted meat smeared on white bread. I liked it as a kid. Potted meat is nasty too but it is more like a spread so you can use it as pate & add different spices & herbs & then put on crackers.

I was poor growing up so we had plenty of both of those canned meats at times. ack!
& then of course tuna & salmon patties grilled.

Did you ever had the Prarie Boy canned sausage things? kinda like vienna sausages. I remember those from growing up. Money was always tight, but I didn't really suffer from it. One year for school, I got 2 pair of BOYs jeans and 2 shirts. Was luck to have that.

My mama made mackerel patties, I never had salmon until I was probably 20 yrs old. Now I no longer buy mackerel, and we are having salmon patties to go with the leftover blackeyed peas I made for lunch. With mac and cheese, the homemade variety, if I have any cheese in the fridge.

I told my 6 yr old she better get over her prejudice against peas, that there may come a time that is all she has to eat. I am not really in major danger of losing my job, but due to call offs, I have 45 hrs out of a possible 80 on my check coming in next week.

I know someone who does basic macaroni and cheese (either baked or in a crock pot) and will add cubed spam or small slices of hot dogs.

if you are talking about those little short hotdog like things in a can, then yes. Mom used to put them in with baked macaroni & cheese. It was like ham & cheese and I still like that once in awhile.

I like peas too and what is neat about them is as soon as you use them in a dumpling or caserole, you have this pot pie effect going on

I hated those salmon patties as a kid but I love them now.

I tell you what, I keep a nice stash of pasta around & go to the restaurant depot for both pasta & huge chunks of cheese. The pasta keeps easy if it is in a cool place & Then slice up/shred the cheese & freeze in containers. It will freeze with no problems for about 6 months.

IN those days we would get a half a cow that would fill the freezer. I am not sure if you can do that today if it would be cost effective but that is when we had hard working farmers as friends & we would trade with them. Mom would sew for them & they would drop off 5 gallons of warm cows milk topped with the cream every sunday morning. The cream would settle & come off the top for special things. That was nice.
