Some fear foreclosures mean loss of vote

[from WoodSprite: it DOESN'T mean you can't vote. Call your County Board of Elections NOW and change your address. That's all it takes. Deadlines are coming up, though - about a month before the election - so please do it TODAY!]

State political parties have traditionally used the mail to determine which voters to challenge. By sending out mailings to voters likely to be of the opposite party, and then seeing which mailings are returned as undeliverable, they know whom to challenge at the polls for not living at their registered address. Using public lists of foreclosed homes, however, can save money by allowing a party to avoiding sending out mailings.

This is horrible. I hadn't even thought about this aspect of the ramifications of all the foreclosures.

Me, neither - I could hardly believe my eyes, and then Truckerwife's post this morning scared me to death, which is why I spammed three different forums here with info.

Fortunately the Obama campaign filed a federal lawsuit in Michigan a few weeks ago to try and prevent this tactic, but with the slant of much of the reporting, I'm really worried that most people in this situation - already feeling beaten down and with so much else to worry about - are just going to believe they're being punished or something and not even try to vote?

      I hate this...
