    Confirmation Hearing. Fun!

I didn't have to be at court, because the judge signed my confirmation order yesterday or the day before, but I went anyway. I got there way early. Court didn't start til 9:30, but I had marked 9:00 in my planner and I think I was there a few minutes earlier than that. There was only one other attorney there when I arrived.

When the Trustee arrived he introduced himself to me. At that moment I was the only female in the court room besides his own assistant and another attorney with whom I am sure he was already acquainted. So I guess, to him, I was obviously me.

The other attorneys had arrived and already done their announcements when he arrived. He arrived with much fanfare and an entourage. And luggage! There were over 200 cases on the docket for the day. I was #41. But really I was first. lol.

When Mr. T went up to make his announcements he announced my case first and told everybody I was the first and only Pro Se Chapter 13 he had confirmed this side of the Trinity. lol. That was kind of neat. They made a joke about the Debtor's Bar. Apparently I was the only one who passed? lol.

It was pretty funny how the other attorneys attitudes toward me changed when they learned I was just a pro se filer. Up until they knew who I was, they seemed curious about me being in there, especially when Mr. T came straight up and shook my hand, but after he told everybody who I was, they ignored me like a little dust bunny.

The only other Pro Se filers today got their case dismissed without prejudice. They had shown up to their 341 without identification. Then they failed to show up at all when their 341 was rescheduled. They were present in court today, but they had written a letter to the judge requesting that their case be dismissed so that that they could retain an attorney. He did make a comment about the letter not being in the form of a motion he could rule upon, but he told them he would dismiss without prejudice so they can refile with representation, but ONLY if they refile WITH representation.

The judge is really very nice. And he seems so young! He seemed to trend toward the generous side issuing continuances instead of dismissals. That was just my impression. Of course, I didn't hear any cases that got his ire up, so maybe he's not so nice if somebody gets on his bad side.

Apparently all the fun cases with objections were in the afternoon, but I couldn't stay that long. I was so hungry, my stomach was growling and I was afraid the judge could hear it. So I only stayed until the first break. Also, I was already parked for 2 hours in a 90 minute parking zone, so I needed to move my car anyway. Fortunately I did not get a ticket.

I do, however, have a copy of the docket, with notes about the day's proceedings, so I can look up some cases that look interesting on PACER.

Excellent. Congratulations! I had a little different treatment by the attorneys in my District. When they found out that I was pro se, and that I usually dressed as good as or better than them, they would joke around with me present, but never a cold shoulder. When I was confirmed, the gentleman attorney, who was older and apparently the most respected person in the room other than the Judge, personally shook my hand and congratulated me. That said alot.

But this is your moment, so Congratulations on doing what, apparently, no other pro se filter could do under that Trustee!

Gee I wish attitude was all about how you dress here. Apparently not. Maybe I was a little over dressed. Maybe I sat on the wrong side of the room. (All of the other women sat on the other side, and I was sitting with the men! But I was there first!) I dunno. I dressed like I was going for a corporate job interview and I felt over dressed compared to the other women, but not compared to the guys. They all had nice suits. The IRS attorney wore pin stripes. I thought I was dressed better than the only female attorney. But I learned how to dress Yankee and this is Texas. We were wearing the same approximate colors, but somehow, her royal purple velvet blazer just looked... I dunno... how do you say.... She was glowing brightly way on the other side of the court room, and she had some pretty tough cases to deal with, so I didn't get a chance to talk to her at all.

It's ok, I don't mind that they gave me the cold shoulder. Just a bunch of dumb guys anyway. What do they know? (just kidding!) haha maybe they were jealous.

(After all this legal business I'm seriously thinking of trying for an admin assistant type job in a law office. I did want to be a lawyer when I was little. lol)

That's funny. My parents wanted me to go to law school. They even had the school picked out that I was "supposed" to go to. Unfortunately, they failed to clue me in on this plan until I was well into my 30s and by then I had already derailed my train into the dead end mud puddle of accounting. (I was SO good at it in school, but I absolutely hated it when I was doing it all the time.)

That's odd because I too wanted to be a lawyer when I was little but my older sister beat me to it and I figured one lawyer in the family was enough. More than once she has encouraged me to go to law school. I think the law is a lot of fun but I'm to old to be staying to 2am cramming for tests anymore.
So the poor debtor, seeing naught around him
Yet feels the narrow limits that impound him
Grieves at his debt and studies to evade it
And finds at last he might as well have paid it.

Yeah, there is that 2 a.m. thing... and then there is student loan debt. Who really wants to deal with that after all we have been through?

Big congratulations tigergem! I have followed your posts here since i first started lurking the end of last year, following your case with fascination. I am in awe of anyone filing pro se -- from my simple little no asset 7 all the way to what you've accomplished. You deserve to be very, very proud of yourself!

Wow, thanks. I don't mean to sound... braggish or anything, because I'm really not, but it really didn't seem all that difficult to me. Of course, I didn't have a bunch of complicated issues to deal with. Mine really was probably as simple as a Chapter 13 possibly can be. I'm just hoping it stays that way.
