Filing Fee

My paperwork states filing fee can be paid by cashier's/bank check or a money order. Can this be any regular money order, like can be obtained at my local grocery store, or does it have to be a specific type (i.e., Post Office or such)?

I believe that it can be any money order, but personally, I would buy one from the Post Office. Western Union MOs, that many of the food stores provide, has been counterfeited many, many times. If you are uncertain, ask the clerk of your BK court.

As Mrs. Cat wrote, I would use funds from a "real" Bank, like your personal Bank or the U.S. Post Office.

I need to add this. If you hand deliver the petition to the Clerk's Office, you can pay in cash. However, you need EXACT change as they will not make any change for you! I brought exactly $274.00. (As always, validate this with your local Court, by calling the Intake Center or Clerk's office to determine what their cash policy is.)

I paid cash as well and they do not make change so you either bring the exact amount or eat the difference.

I use money orders from the US Post office for my rent too. They're cheaper and a lot more difficult to counterfeit as they're made more like currency.

im in los angeles, and they happily made change for me(well, at least she was smiling and friendly the whole time). i paid cash, then again, fee was $299, i paid with 3, one hundred dollar bills, 1 buck change.
