My sister filed for bankruptcy with her husband and I think that it will all be finalized next month. The problem is that she is in an abusive marriage and needs to file for an order of protection from her husband. They are both on the bankruptcy documents. Will filing for a protection order affect her bankruptcy? We are still trying to convince her to file the protection order but I know this will be a sticking point for her. Any info will help a lot.

Thank you! That's what I thought but I wanted to make sure before I present all options to her. She strongly exhibits battered woman sydrome and we are going to talk to her about all her options when she comes to california for a visit. Since we are so far away there is little we can do without her willingness. Knowing that this will not affect her bankruptcy helps a great deal.

Even if you were living right next door to them, there is little you can do without your sister's willingness and cooperation. My DH and I have tried more than once to help women in an abusive relationship, only to become the enemies of BOTH people."To go bravely forward is to invite a miracle."

AngelinaCat, I completely agree with you which is why I'm trying to look into all options before I present any of them to her. She has to be on the same page and willing to help herself. Even if she never speaks to me again, she is my sister and I cannot stop trying to help her.

Take it from one who's been there with her ex no matter what my family said to me I would not listen.
It was only after I went into therapy and I got myself emotionally stronger that I finally woke up and told the scumbag to hit the road.
Please be supportive of your sister and when she finally has had enough only then will she listen. I just pray it's not to late as it is for so many women. I was one of the lucky ones.

You are doing the right thing. Is there any way she can just stay out there with you and never go back? Not sure if there are kids involved but if the bankruptcy is close to being discharged and closed what a better way to really make a fresh start from her old life? Just a thought but otherwise good luck!
