Junk Mail Post Filing, Plain Green and etc.. 300% APR Loan

I noticed after I filed in a week or two the junk mail started piling up, credit counseling services, loans for absurd APRs, one today came from a company called "Plain Green" offering loans up to $1,200 for 300% to 400% and up. Sounds like a great deal, right!

It appears that once you file, the word get's out and the junk arrives.

Is there anyway to opt-out of this?

I don't remember getting any of those junk mailings after we filed. Or at least, if we did, there weren't enough to make any impression....

I get lots, most of them shredder-worthy. I've stayed opted-in just in case something good comes along. I wish I could opt out of just the Fingerhut catalogs though, a lot of trees gave it up for Fingerhut.

Write them a letter and ask them to remove you from their mailing list.

As soon as I filed--literally within the first 48 hours--my mailbox started to fill up with offers from car dealers all over the state offering "fresh start" financing and claiming to provide an "opportunity to rebuild your credit" by financing a car or truck. Some of these were from sleazy used car dealers, but most were from actual new car dealers such as Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Chrysler, and Nissan. The only car brand which did not send these kind of offers was Honda, and I don't know why that is. I filed for Chapter 7, btw.

We are about a year from discharge and we get monthly credit card apps. The last one was for $1,500 limit @ 29.9% apr, $75 origination fee, and $45/yr maintenance fee. These people are crazy. They hope someone in desperation will bite I guess.

Been in Chapter 13 for 40 months and just received the Plain Green junk mail offering me an $800 loan at an APR of 379.8% (or something like that). Absolutely incredible that any one would fall for that. I typically receive mailings on mortgage refinancing about twice a month, but not much else in the way of credit card offers.

You, as it was pointed out earlier, can opt out of those pre-screened offers by contacting the credit bureaus or you can just do as I do and immediately run them through the shredder having a good laugh as I do it.

My favorite was a scam mailing for work at home that included a check for $1500 or so written out to me. They said that they wanted 'secret shoppers' to survey Western Union. You deposit the check, send them $1000 or so via Western Union and keep the rest. The scam should be obvious. The check is no good, and your bank will reverse your deposit and you are out the cash you sent them to Western Union.

Lots of people fall for the Plain Green stuff...same scam as the Payday loans. Bad credit and no where else to turn--sometimes we do stupid stuff to try to keep things running. Hopefully post-bankruptcy not many people fall into this.

I started getting those things about a week after I filed.

                    More fodder for the shredder.
Chapter 7, above median, no asset. Discharged with no UST involvement.

I filled out the opt-out request in the past, maybe it was too long ago? I suppose I will just weed out the garbage because I feel I may need to repair my credit with a new credit card down the road, really do not want to do that and am happy using a debit card.

You can opt out of pre-screened credit and insurance offers for 5 years or permanently. For info, go to http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles...alls-and-email. There is also info on opting out of direct mail and telemarketing.
