Question Job with a bank after bankruptcy?

Is it even possible to get a job with a bank after bankruptcy, or is it just a pipe dream?

I know somebody in a bank who said that the bank was hiring, and told me to use her as the person who referred me to the job. Of course, there will be a background check. Thing is, not only are they a bank and will probably frown upon a bankrupt person working for them, but they were also one of my creditors that I filed relief from (had a credit card with them that a balance of $1,500. It was discharged this past October).

I've already filled out and submitted their application, as well as taken their pre-employment job screening test that they have. Now I'm just waiting to hear on whether or not I'll be granted an interview. Probably pointless, but I thought, what the hell, can't hurt trying. lol

Not sure about getting a job with one, but I know my wife kept a job with one after bankruptcy (also one of our creditors).

It never hurts to try. The getting a job after BK came up in my consultation the other day. The attorney said that the government will hire you before, but not after. He kind of laughed about it because he said that before would be when someone would more likely be tempted to steal from a company when they needed the money vs after. Can't say I disagree with that. Is this a local bank or a national one? Just wondering. A local one might be more likely to hire you because they'd look at it on an individual basis (maybe) vs a national one probably has strict rules and regulations on this. Either way I hope it works out. Good luck.

It's a national bank.....Key Bank. Thanks, I hope it works out too. I need money cause my husband is out of work and I only work part time in retail. Can't make ends meet.

Once you fill out the employment application, provide your SS number and other required information, with your signature you allow them to investigate your background and credit as that is all worded in the paragraph above your signature. You may or may not get an interview - it depends on their hiring practices when it comes to BK. It is not illegal for them not to hire you due to your BK; if you were already working for them and then they fired you for filing BK is when it is illegal. Many banks have policies in place as to background and credit requirements for new hires and usually one is told right up front about that or it may be listed on their website in their employment section. Just remember one thing - do not let your bankruptcy keep you from apply for any job - if asked about it just be open and honest as to why you filed.

Actually, the Federal government can only deny employment because of a BK in very limited circumstances, including when the job requires a security clearance. Private employers don't have the same restriction. A private employer can't fire a current employee because of BK, but they can deny employment because of a BK. See 11 USC § 525. The difference between the federal government and private employers is not real clear, but it came up in another thread recently that there is case law saying that a private employer can discriminate against prospective employees based on BK.

When I said government, I really meant military.
