A judgment is a civil court order that allows a creditor to obtain payment from a debtor without the debtor's consent. The most common avenues used are wage garnishment (where it is permitted) and bank account levy, where the bank is ordered to seize the debtors deposits and channel the money through the local sheriff's office to the creditor.
A judgment lien allows the creditor holding a judgment to obtain title to a debtor's valuable assets, such as houses, real estate and financed vehicles. A civil court judgment must usually be obtained in order for a creditor to obtain a lien.
