Why update profile with state information?

I just logged in after being away a few months. I see it is "required" that we update our profile to include our state. Why?

I would imagine that any advice given/asked for would be from the perspective of your state's particular rules, exemptions and such; it saves anyone who is listening to/giving advice the step of asking what state you're in. Just a guess.

Well, I certainly would hope I have a choice whether my state name is visible in the forums.

Just type in anything, like no thanks. it will take whatever you put in.

It only allows you to type in a state. I just tried it again. That's okay. I used another state anyway.

Well that works too. I know I did something to begin with when I signed up, then changed it after I felt a bit more comfortable.
