I'm going to be filing for bankruptcy (ch 7, no asset) early next week. My cell phone plan is up for renewal. Should I renew my plan and pay for a new phone. Would the contract be voided if I included it in my bk filing? Do I lose the phone that I just paid for?

Do you owe money on your cell phone account? If not there is no need to include them as a creditor.
If you are worried, is it really necessary to renew the contract now?
You said you just got a new phone? If that's the case why get another new phone?Chapter 7 filed December 11, 2009, 341 Meeting held on January 7, 2010

I guess I was just a bit worried as I think I read in other threads that the cell phone company will shut down your account if you filed bankruptcy or reset it in some way. I'm also worried that the cell phone company won't allow me to renew a new contract along with a new phone post bankruptcy.

You need to find out if your cell phone carrier will run another credit check if you renew your contract. If not you have no issue. If they do you may be out of a cell phone carrier._________________________________________

Maybe for your area you do not have to list them as a creditor - however there are many many others that MUST list - and Virginia is one state that you must list - even if you dont plan on filing against your cell phone to get out of the contract, you MUST provide notification that you are filing BK.
Please dont tell people they dont need to include cell phones if you dont know what their district specific laws are - that could screw people up in the long run.
