    Is this a typical question?

A term life insurance brokerage company wants to know if I have ever filed bankruptcy. I know some insurance companies run your credit anyway, but I have never been asked this.

Just wondering if this is typical.

We were asked that last year when we got our initial quotes. Bk wasn't even on my mind then but I do remember the question.

Some states allow insurance companies to base eligibility on your financial history (credit scores, bk filings, etc). Sounds like yours may be one of them
I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

      06/01/06 - Filed Ch 13
      06/28/06 - 341 Meeting
      07/18/06 - Confirmation Hearing - not confirmed, 3 objections
10/05/06 - Hearing to resolve 2 trustee objections
01/24/07 - Judge dismisses mortgage company objection
      09/27/07 - Confirmed at last!
06/10/11 - Trustee confirms all payments made
      08/10/11 - DISCHARGED !

      10/02/11 - CASE CLOSED
Countdown: 60 months paid, 0 months to go

That sounds to me like Mutual of Omaha has bought marketing from the CRA's. I opted out of all that crap.

Yes, when you applied for the insurance somewhere in that application you gave them permission to run a credit check. If the state in which you reside does not allow insurance credit profiling (call your DOI to find out if they do if you are not cetain), they cannot raise the cost of your insurance due to your BK. If you suspect they are offering higher rates, contact your DOI and complain. What I would do is contact them directly if your state does not allow insurance credit profiling and ask they to rerun your application under those circumstances.

Well, if I gave them permission to run my credit, which I don't think I did, because it was just a request for a quote and I didn't even give them my social security number yet, then why are they asking me if I ever filed for BK? If they had my permission to run my credit, they wouldn't need to ask me, would they?

Maybe - I'm purely guessing - but maybe filing would disqualify you, and they're saving themselves the $$ it costs to run your credit if you voluntarily admit you have filed. Don't know - just a thought.
04/01/10 - Hit rock bottom and knew we were going to have to file for bankruptcy and surrender our home. 12/14/10 - Filed Chapter 7, 02/09/11 - 341 Hearing, 04/14/11 -

Yeah, maybe. I dunno. I wonder when permission to breathe will governed by your credit score?
