What is the time frame before getting kicked out in Orange County?Anyway to prolong?

My wife and I have a home that we plan to let go. Our mortgage was through Countrywide, now Bank of America. I know the process is backed up and I know friends in other counties who have been in there home for more than a year. We live in Orange County, CA

What is the typical time frame from the time we stop payment until we get a 30 day notice? I know it really depends on the county in which you live. We like to stay in our home as long as possible to build a savings. Also, is there anyway to prolong the the process? tip/tricks?

A good friend of mine hasn't made a payment since 12/08 and they have yet to be foreclosed on. We're in central CA.
