    Signer on parents' bank accounts

Holy Cow!! So glad I thought of this now and not later. I am a signer on my parents' bank account, and my husband is a joint owner on his dad's account. I'm guessing we need to get our names off of there before we file, huh? And is this going to be seen as trying to hide assets?

For what it's worth - don't know if it would matter - but we don't plan on filing for at least another 4-5 months. Can they remove us now with no issues? And honestly, they could have already removed us and we don't know about it

My husband's name is on the deed to his dad's property. We don't think of it as ours. But yesterday, during our filing, the question was asked about owning other property....and it counted towards our assets. Our attorney feels that the trustee won't bother with an elderly person's property...but he could theoretically make us sell our interest in it.

We also had to list all of our bank accounts--even the one that I'm on with our daughter. Talk to your attorney--hopefully you can get your names off the accounts without any problems.

I am pretty sure we are not on the deeds for their properties - God, I hope not!! I guess I could find this out pretty quickly by just searching on the county website and see if our names come up. Geez, now that I think about it, I think my mom put me on some CDs as well. This just stinks!!!

Well, appears we aren't on the deeds for the property - so that's a good thing. Did some more online research and taking our names off isn't such a great idea either. But looks like it's easily proven that it's not our money. As long as we can document that money going into the account isn't ours - which we obviously can, I think we're fine.

This does bring to mind another question though. I know my dad - trust me, he will do this. As soon as I mention it, he's going to go close the accounts anyway. I obviously can't stop him. I guess just tell the attorney all of this and see what he says....... UGH!! I'm so tired of stressing over all this crap!!

Well, that is probably a good thing, as the only way that I know of today is to totally close the account and start over.

We learned that the hard way when our god-daughter added our names to her account at BOA for the simple matter of cashing a check that came to US drawn on a BOA account. We did not have a BOA account and did not want one. But because our names were added for this one-time transaction, to help us out, it caused a whole mess of problems all the way around.

That is true - I worked in banking years ago - and the only way to remove someone is to close the account. I'd hate to ask them to do that - but I sure would hate to be faced with paying them back what the trustee took from them as well. In searching online, it's never seemed to be an issue, other than extra documentation needed for the trustee. I just know my dad isn't going to trust that and is going to close it anyway - so I'll need to have my attorney prepared for that glitch.
