I just added an additional $9.99 line to my ATT plan over the weekend to get a free phone to have for my kids. It requested my SS# for a credit check. Since I'm in an active 13 plan, I assume it sucks.

The phone shipped today. No deposit needed.

$800 deposit is pretty high, it leads me to assume payments were missed in the past? If not, call them up and threaten to cancel.

I'm on a auto-payment plan of around $180/month and have never missed one.

You may want to try these people, I got my wife a phone through them, the service is via Verizon Wireless, but no credit check or other stuff like that. Be forewarned that if you don't pay your bill on due date, they WILL shut you down immediately, and they WILL disconnect your number for good after a week or so.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm just a satisfied customer, nothing else. YMMV.

      Good luck.
No person in their right mind files a Ch. 13 with lien strip pro se. I have. Therefore, please consider me insane and clinically certifiable when reading my posts, and DO NOT take them as legal advice of any kind.Thank you.

I fully agree with prepaid phones. They're not what they used to be when it was only Tracfone!
That being said, dh applied for a Sprint phone to see what would happen. We hadn't filed bk yet (just had our 341 last week) but I'm sure his FICO was in the low to mid 400's. He received a phone without a deposit; the only catch being that he couldn't add additional lines yet. Then a month later he got a letter saying that he now could.
I strongly prefer prepaids because should something happen where you can't afford the monthly payment, you reload when you can and then there is no recourse.
Out of a BK I want to have as few obligations as possible; contracts being one of them! Had he discussed this with me prior I would have been 100% opposed, but now we're stuck with it. Luckily there is a fairly inexpensive plan that would have cost him the same as what he was paying for a prepaid.

Could have rejected the contract in bankruptcy.

            This is true.
Which is understandable yet doesn't make sense at the same time. If they pulled his reports they'd see that he hadn't paid any of his creditors in the last 6-10 months which you'd THINK would mean more, but it is what it is. I guess there's a reason why I am not the CEO of a cell phone company ;)

              The plan I signed up for was $59.99 Family plan with 550 min + 3rd line for $9.99 + Unlimited family messaging $30.00. They say it's $196.00 per month + 19.99 for 2nd & 3rd line + $30.00 for unlimited messaging. WTF?!

              I'm pretty pissed.
Yep! WTF!!! Thats AT&T, full of surprises! I called and called and called and got nowhere with my problem, hope you get somewhere with yours. I am done as of Dec 23 2010 with AT&T.

Lucky you...maybe it is because you are in a CH 13 and we were a CH 7...

                As for us...
Nope, never paid a late bill, never missed a bill because we intended on keeping this account. We even have been with AT&T for last 6 years.

Since it had to be listed per my attourney on our BK papers, AT&T closed our one account and gave us a new number on our account, never telling us and someone at the top made the decision that if anyone files BK and has it charged off on their BK in order to sign a new contract, add a line, yadda, yadda, yadda, they require a $800.00 deposit no matter what your credit is for 2 years out from your discharge date. Then after your 2 year discharge date don't assume you will get a contract free and clear, there will still be some sort of contrac that requires a deposit of some sort. F off AT&T!!

I am thinking that if I can't sign up for Verizion or Sprint after Dec 23rd 2010 when our contract is up with AT&T through my work to get a discount, we will probably go pre paid.

Thats a whole nother can of worms I don't get. We charged off the AT&T and never signed a contract for another cell phone, not sure why we are still tied into AT&T. They said we would owe them $100.00 for each phone on our plan for earily withdrawl. Isn't that illegal since we were put it on our BK?? How is that if we never signed a new contract?? How is that if we were discharged CH 7?? Someone somewhere is pissin me off!

Not happy, but still glad we filed and are out from under that rock we originally crawled under.

Now to the next part of our post BK getting our credit report and cleaning house! But that is another thread.

It's because you listed them on your schedules.

Mine was never listed on any schedule and we just continued to pay like nothing ever changed.

Is this for IPhones or another smart phone? If so, you have $30 per phone data plan to add in also.

Mine is $185 with the $69.99 700 min plan, unlimited messaging for 2 iphones and 1 basic phone. This is with a 25% company discount.

No, it is for one smart phone and two reg phones. The unlimited family messaging for $30.00 covers their data plan requirement.

I went into the store yesterday and they said the bill covers two months and my reg monthly charges should be $120.00 including taxes. We'll see....
