How do you pick an attorney!

We are feeling very overwhelmed. We feel inundated with thousands of BK lawyer choices, yet no real recommendations to go off of, or where exactly to start. I think our "case" is complex due to our high income and business debt so I know we cant settle on just any lawyer.

Where do I start to look? We are located in Ca.

Take a look at the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys at www.nacba.org. You can enter your address at the top right and 'search' for a member BK attorney closest to you.

I am an attorney, but I am just not your attorney.
As such, any statement is not intended to create an attorney/client relationship.

        mmo,

The above is a good reference and I also went to 5 attorneys before deciding. The difference between law firms and attorneys was profound. The advise was also very different. I eventually settled for a firm that had a long background in bankruptcy, real estate and business law. I met with both partners of the firm for an extended period of time and felt confident and comfortable with their abilities.

We are still winding up the case and gathering all info needed so a final judgement on the decision to go with this firm remains in the future. I cant afford to get this wrong so I hope I chose wisely. So far so good, very personable and very accessable to my needs. This was one of my requirements.

Just keep looking until it feels right then do some homework on the firm or attorney.

        good luck.

You may also want to search the State Bar website for certified bankruptcy specialist in your area: http://members.calbar.ca.gov/search/ls_search.aspx. There's no reason to limit yourself to certified specialists as there are plenty of experienced BK lawyers who haven't jumped through the hoops to get certified. But, a combo of the certification and lots of experience could be a good sign. Also, use the same website to look up any attorney you are considering to make sure they haven't been subject to disciplinary action in the past.
