Rent Payment Question

Hi All,

We rent a home from my dad, and have done so for the last 18 months. By the time we file we will have been renting approx 2 years. We make our rent payments every single month on or around the same time from each other. We have a signed rental agreement from 18 months ago when we moved in.

Can this in any way be construed as insider payment to a family member, even though it is CLEARLY documented as our rent payment on our side & on my dad's side as well?

Wanted to add, my dad has a seperate bank account that is for the sole purpose of the house we rent to him, and only used to deposit the check we give him and make the house payment and any other house related expenses only.

Not to my knowledge. You're paying rent and the intent is clear about that. You did things the right way (have a signed lease, make the payments in a trackable way). Good for you!

I wouldn't worry about it. We live WITH our in-laws and contribute 500$. I write them a check every and put rent in the memo part. Our lawyer said it was ok, and that the trustee would expect to see some kind of contribution.
