Planning to spend tax return on these items....

Plan is to get and use tax refund before we file. Receipts will be kept for everything...but I have a list of things I'd like to spend the refund on. Does anything jump out as a big no-no?

    Refund "estimate" is $2500.

$450 to stock up on Paper products, canned food, cleaning supplies, toiletries, batteries, and OTC meds (like Tylenol, allergies meds, vitamins) etc...

    $800 towards lawyer fees

$150 Eye exam for 9 yr old. (and possibly new glasses)

    $75 Work boots for husband

$200 New shoes/clothes for kids (new season--it'll be warm here by Spring)

$250 House maintenance (paint, AC filters)

    $150 Auto maintenance

$140 Pay extra month of auto insurance

    $100 Refill prescription Rx's

And the only one I'm worried about--husband is buying a full pig from someone he knows through work. To have the whole pig taken to the butcher and made into various cuts will cost $150.
That falls under food correct? I mean, that would be A TON of meat and be like stocking up, right?

Those are our plans for the refund--anything that raises eyebrows?

A Whole Pig, hopefully you have a large freezer

None of those items are eyebrow raising, not a big deal.

We plan on using part of our tax return, if there is enough after attorney fees, for a quarter cow. It's meat so it has to fly under the food catagory.

You are VERY WISE. Not only are you beating future inflation (I sense will be upon us soon), but food insurance is better than money insurance. You cannot eat a Federal reserve note, nor would you wish to.

BK may be the smallest of our problems if Cap and Trade comes about. Wood stoves are a good investment as well.

Your list is very good and for meat, you are doing this frugally as I'm sure it is cheaper than your local market. Storeable meats are a good idea as well as soaps, tooth pastes and ammunition. Not only for you, but for trade. Think hams, corned beef, Dinty Moore stews etc.

The Mormons do this and the idea is religious but practical. I have done this as you cannot go wrong. you will eventually eat your investment at a lower price.

I think you got it really together. 'Hub

One more suggestion. A generator and store about 20 gallons of gasoline (safely) and rotate five gallons a week into the car as gasoline does not store too long. Always run the generator out of gas between use. It saves the carb from varnishing up. 'Hub.

That leads me to a question....would buying some ammo actually be allowable? My husband really wants to--but I wasn't sure if we could?

I'm not talking $500 worth, but maybe $150? My husbands motto---one can never have too much ammo.

LOL. Does he hunt? Does he bring game (food) home? I would say, in small amounts (like cigarette smokers) sure, why not? It is necessary for home protection and barter. I would not go overboard on that in our times. You don't want ATF on your door. LOL.

My choice is a nice Rossi long rifle. It is a rip off of the old shooting gallery rifles. Long rifle, hollow point kills a squirrel for food or a person as protection. Cheap, and 22 cal.

                  Nothing does better close up as a S & W 38.

Only my opinion understand. I once was almost pulled out of my car at a light. Won't happen again. 'Hub

He does hunt, it's just been many years. I know he'd like to get back into it though.

I will tell him a few boxes of ammo should be ok. He'll be thrilled. I know it's rather hard to find here though. Especially for the .45

Over a year ago I had someone try to jump in my car when I was leaving work one night. After that, my husband insisted that I learn how to shoot and handle a weapon. (He's grown up around guns, hunting....)

And I would love to buy a pig! But like you it won't be happening this year. Plus I'd need a bigger freezer! LOL! I have this image of Roy Scheider from the movie Jaws..I think we're gonna need a bigger freezer (boat).

We bought a quarter cow back in July and are just about out of the meat now. Have a roast or two and a couple of soup bones left. Have some short ribs defrosting in the fridge now...*drools*.

I'm really hoping we have enough for more meat cause that sure saved us so much in the long run. And it's so convenient not having to pack grocery store meat yourself for long term freezer storage. Plus paying the same price, I think it was $3.50 or so per pound, for hamurger and premium cuts of steak??!!! Yeah, that's a good reason for buying bulk!

Yep! I know the cuts will be much better than regular store cuts, and it'll save us money on groceries over the next year. We're already planning for next year and doing part of a cow.

I know my husband would also like to do some fishing---and catch some to freeze. I'm not sure how long that will last in "deep freeze" though. I should ask him.

I'm really looking forward to getting our tax refund and stocking up on household items and groceries. Seems the last couple of years we used it to go to CC's and it disappeared into the abyss and never made a dent.
