All of our big bills like mortgage, car payments and utilities are being paid online so the payments for those will show up on our bank statements. No receipts required.

I take our grocery/gas money out each week via atm and put it into an envelope. Each time I take money out of the envelope to pay for something the change and the receipt go back into the envelope. At the end of the week I organize the receipts by date then mark what week it was on the envelope. I'm saving receipts for everything just in case.

If they can see from bank statements where you are using your money--it is AS important to have a receipt for those items? Most of our stuff is done by debit, but some things i have written checks for--which would show only amount and check # on bank statements.
The nice thing about using the debit card if your bank has a decent online download, you can use it to budget with Microsoft Money.

I kept even the receipts that I used debit card, but I guess thats up to you depending on the description that shows up on your statement. Dont forget this isnt just for them, but hopefully a tool for you.
