Kohls card made it thru BK

I am in shock. We were officially discharged and closed first of this week. Because so many recommended checking your credit report after that happens, last night I checked. All our cc were closed, and included in our BK, good. Everything appears normal, well like it should after BK. Even our 2nd mortgage appears to be reporting timely payments while we were in BK and before discharge, good news. Our 1st mortgage isn't showing discharged, I will call them today, not too worried though. It right now appears as a good standing secured credit. Shows timely payments since 2003. Good.

I noticed we still have 2 open accts, one was a Goody's card, which we never used and ofcourse they went out of business so that card is a waste and we didn't file on it, actually forgot we even had it. Then I noticed we had a Kohls card. It too wasn't used, well long time ago, but forgot about it also. I just assumed it was gone, never activated the last cc that came (2006). Anyway, I dig into a drawer where we have some important papers and found the cc, still in the original envelope, never even opened. I decided to give it a shot and try activating it. Guess what! It is now active. Low credit limit ($500), which is good. Can't overcharge. No Kohls close, we have to drive 35 miles to get to one. Don't intend to use it often, maybe every couple months to buy my boys clothes, that's it. We can pay it off each month as everyone recommends. I said no cc for us. I am only intending to use this cc to reestablish credit. I have learned my lesson.

I am thrilled to see our 2nd mortgage is reporting good payment history, that's a big help. I know I said no more credit, but now that we are thru this BK, I realize someday we might need credit. Our high mileage cars won't last forever, and if we need to replace them someday, it might be nice to be able to get a decent interest rate.

I called our attorney this morning to ask why 1st isn't showing as discharged and she said I could give them a call and tell them to check pacer, I think I will later today. I want online access again, so hopefully that will happen.

I thought those who are either close to discharge or might be thinking about BK would appreciate a good news story. I feel very blessed right now, and am feeling like this BK was meant for us. When I looked at our credit reports, I saw our debt shows as nothing, well other then 1st mortgage, but even with that, we look good now, it's unbelieveable. I didn't check our credit score, I am scared, and frankly I think I will just give that time to improve. Too soon right now for that.

That's a good point, I wonder if that can be done. I was justplaintired when I joined. Now I am feeling an overwhelming feeling of relief and like it's true what they say, this is our fresh start.

Did you BK Chase in your filing? If so, your Kohl's card may not stay open long. It could get cancelled at any time or you may get lucky and it will stay open. We had a Dress Barn charge survive our fililng and it flew under the radar 5 years and a few months after our discharge I went to use it and it was denied. When I called customer service, the reason for the denial was that the account was now closed due to a BK on my credit report.

Use it now and and then and be careful with it because if they pull your reports for any reason, even to offer you a credit increase, it can get closed out. Happens to a lot of us.

Well I don't really have any plans on using the cc. So now to avoid any embarrassment how do I find out if it's closed before I go to use it? That is an embarrassment I don't want. I honestly don't really want a cc, I just want to rebuild credit. I'd do it another way, but I don't how. We are not ready for another car yet, we get offers, but they would be very high interest rates and we just aren't ready to jump into that right now, maybe someday. I didn't think it would matter to me (our credit), but it does.

If it hasn't been used in a while, it may be closed out since many creditors over the past few years have closed out unused cards even for folks with excellent credit. Call the customer service number on the card or go online to your account and you will find out if it is closed or open. If open, it's up to you if you want to keep it. It will help your credit. Use it for small purchase now and then and pay off in full prior to the due date. Use it as a tool if it stays open. There is no guarantee it will, however, and you may encounter what happened to me with my Dress Barn charge several weeks or years down the line. I did not use the Dress Barn charge for about a year prior to that event but used it now and then before maybe 4 times a year. I believe the non-use for a year had a lot to do with it...

Hi. My Kohls card made it through our filing as well (we are almost one year into our Chapter 13) and I charge once per month on the card at the store, then immediately write a check for the full amount at the point of purchase. I have not checked my report, but this has to have made even a little bit of diiference.

I hope I could be of help.

I am not doing any cards again, period. I have heard that jewelry stores (Like Zales) will keep your accounts open forever and not close them if you file BK with no balance on a card. I have a 8 year old Goodman's card I have not had a balance on for six years, and it is still open with a 4K limit. I actually asked at their customer service phone line if they would close it automatically if they found a BK on my credit report or in public records, and the rep said "Nope, we only care about what you can buy and what you owe us". I am not closing it, just going to leave it there and see if that is the case.

What happens if you use a Kohl's card or the like and the trustee finds out (assuming you are in a 13). Sounds like risky business to me..
