It is so dependent on too many variables. Where you live, how many creditors, the type of case...
A typical Chapter 7 can run from $1,500 to $4,000 for a lawyer to file.
A typical Chapter 13 can run from $3,000 to $6000 with as little as $1,800 up front and the rest in the Plan.Chapter 7 (No Asset/Non-Consumer) Filed (Pro Se) 7/08 (converted from Chapter 13 - 2/10)
Status: (Auto) Discharged and Closed! 5/10

Around here there are some lawyers that will do a $199 chapter 7.
A real attorney and not a paralegal... of course, they probably aren't the best, but if you have a simple case they should be able to get the paperwork filled out.
I met with one the $199 ones, who was even willing to do my 13 for $299. My case was complicated and I knew much more about the new BK laws than he did, so obviously I did not go with him.

wow! $199 for chapter 7! yup, sounds like folks looking for additional income and not attorneys who regularly do bk...
i just can't believe the wide range in fees from place to place, but i am very happy with the $2500 we spent on our bk. excellent attorneys and especially paralegals (who usually do most of the work). even now, after discharge, we can contact them for lingering issues involving creditors calling, writing, etc. and w/ no attitude, always friendly and helpful.Filed: April 2009

yup. The the I actually went with for my CH13 was $1000+filing fee upfront, and an additional $3000 in the plan.
She wasn't much of a people person, but she knew all the BK laws by heart (correctly), had been doing BK in the district for 8 years, had a good working relationship with the trustee, would attend all court hearings personally. All things you want to look for!
