Oh, I don't know. I wouldn't think so unless maybe they thought you were hiding assets?
I just found this forum recently and am still in the thinking/possible planning stages of filing so I'm trying to learn as much here as possible. Haven't even met with a lawyer yet.

Check Criagslist, sometimes somebody is on their who wants to give away a cat, a dog, and once in a while a horse.

with a few exceptions, even the no-kill shelters kill the animals now..

I'm afraid if filing BK meant I had to give up my pets, I'd flee the country first.

I never heard of any no-kill places killing their animals unless it was because an animal was uncurable sick and in pain. Just wondering where you got that from?

I used to work at a no-kill cat shelter. No cat ever was killed unless it was a medical decision and we were always at full capacity and this was like 10 years ago - no recession than.

my brother is a lawyer and was involved with some shelters... they dont normally kill them, but they are over whelmed...(no, i havent told him about my bk)

there was an article in the daytona newspaper not long ago and they are laying off employees and cutting cost.. they spoke of no-kill shelters changing policy out of necessity..

my local shelter says they are no-kill... thats true, they send them to the animal control and they kill them..

if they told you the truth, a lot of people would stop donating... sad but true...

it's probably because now, due to the recession, they're at five time full capacity! It's bad, I know it's bad. What gripes me is that so many landlords don't allow pets. If I wanted to have rental properties, doggone it, I'd put plain ole' Tarrazzo floors like in FL so people could have their pets. Makes me mad!

Are you saying that the no-kill places are sending their overflow to the animal control? That is horrible that is the first time I have heard of that - I am sure that is not the norm for no-kill shelters.

I can understand why the shelters are overwhelmed - I remember when Iworked at the shelter and people used to call because they just "didn't want their pets anymore" - it wasn't even for financial reasons. It was for reasons like "I am having baby and I am worried that my cat is going to kill it" (how dumb! people believe all those urban myths) or "My bf is moving in with me and he doesn't like cats". I was kinda mean to those girls who called because of that and I said "Well, get a different bf than. The cat will never let you down - the bf might." (I didn't really say that - but I was thinking it!).

Funny how the next morning a cat exactly like the one the person calling the day before described would end up dumped on our doorstep.

We would have to say to them that the shelter was for cats who were homeless not for pets who currently had homes. (you would understand why if you saw the pets that came in that were really homeless esp the ones who are found tortured by people in the streets and barely made it alive and need a place to go to heal- if I tell you the stories you would be really depressed.)

If the shelters took in everyone pets, there would be no more room for the true homeless pets who were very sick and need help and than also people start treating the shelter like a dumping ground for pets they don't want to take responsiblity for - it so sad because the pets are the ones who ultimatley suffer. Their little hearts are broken! I have seen it.

But it is sad now too because there are people who want to keep their pets but just can't - I wish we could have a separate shelter for them. It is a different world now and I must say I am glad I don't work at the shelter right now - I probably cry every day.

I can understand that shelters now probably aren't getting any donations but 10 times as many request to take in animals - no one wants to see their pet get euthanzied just because they can't take care of them. I saw a segment on tv about how some shelters are trying to accomdate people pets who are suffering from financial problems on a temporarty basis but it is hard because they only have so much room. They still have the previous residents who didn't have homes to begin with but at least they are trying!

Sorry, I think I hijacked the thread - a bit off topic there.oops! (I have strong feeling about the whole shelter thing)

Inthestorm, can you find a friend or family to temporary house your pets for you? I would definatley call the local shelter about your horses and ask if they know a place you could call - you would be surprised at what is out there. People used to ask me for the numbers of rescue groups all the time.

i lived briefly in palm coast...its supposed to be the forclosure capital of florida... an article in the local rag, said that people just moved away and left the critters to fend for themselves and they would be snuffed in three days.....

its amazing the number of people who still believe that a cat will suck the air from a baby... i have a dumbass who lives up the road from me, that killed his cat when his wife had a baby...

this is how i ended up with so many cats, stuff like that...people would call me up and tell me to come get their cat or they would kill it..... god, i want to move from this place, but i cant just now...

Unfortunately, I don't know how rare this is. My mom used to manage a humane society. Many of the no-kill shelters in the Denver area would take their animals there. "No-kill" just means that they don't do the killing.

My daughter and I do volunteer work now and then at wildlife rehabs and rescues. So many people are dumping cats and dogs in the better neighborhoods hoping someone will take care of them. It's a shame cause most get hit by cars or just cannot survive and not too many people take in strays. As to foreclosures, I agree with your first paragraph. When this housing slump first started the first case that hit the headlines was a well known employee who worked I believe for the town of Brigentine, NJ or one of the nearby shore towns in that area (near Atlantic City, NJ). Apparently he and his wife left the house and did not pay the mortgage for several months while he continued to go to work. The bank evenetually got into the house several weeks after they left and it was heartbreaking what they found. Dead cats, dogs, turtles, hamsters and other small animals and fish in tanks. Articles finally started to come out for folks not to leave their pets like this and to take them to rescues or shelters or inform a family member or friend that pets were being left behind so someone could come.

It's a shame what goes on but there are people working hard to prevent these occurrences.

Having 2 dogs of my own(kids) I feel your pain. I haven't registered them, and thus since there isn't any record of them, I am not even taking the chance of even mentioning their existence. I would do the same with your pets. I know its not the most honest thing to do, but its all about survival. Plus both of my dogs are fixed, so their value is negligible. It may sound stange, but I value their lives more than some of the people I know.

Brighter, I know what you mean! People have mentioned that I should "hide" mine (kinda hard to do with a horse) but then I'm smacked on the hand and told that's FRAUD. I don't know what to do!!! I know I looked at one rental and was told absolutely NO indoor pets, but if we left them outside the fencing was so inadequate they'd end up in the road.

whatch out for advertising them for free. There are some jackasses that will take a free dog and.. well... it doesn't end well for the dog/cat/rabbit. I dont even want to go into what I have heard happens to them, let just say michael vick deserves everything he gets. and also ask if the like snakes. If yes, then forget it.

I'm curious about this. I do not have horses, and havent for 20 years, but my mother does. I know that with my mom, sometimes she has ZERO money to buy her necessities, but her horses never go without. I dont understand. I know she loves them, but she has to eat too! She would be homeless if her friend wasnt letting her live with him, but her horses have shelter.

anyhow, I'm curious about the trustee....If he looks at your post-BK budget and see's room for the luxury of a horse, cant he make you get rid of them? part of Bk is a fresh start, if that fresh start includes something that is going to cause financial grief, isnt it his business to deal with that?
