    So Worried

I am in the preparatory stage of filing for Ch13. Now, my employer is planning to cut back. We've been scaling down for a few months - cutting costs but not headcount. My boss wants to move me into a position I would hate! I suppose it's either that or be laid off. I would absolutely loathe this position. I don't know which is worse - laid off or a job I hate.

We had a change in management a year ago which means I got a new boss at that time - and now this!

I think most people would agree that the choice is clear. In this economy and job market, you keep the job you hate. Lots of people hate their jobs.

Is the job career specific(hard to get those jobs right now) or just a job that you can replace in time?

If the employment market ever improves in the midwest I could probably replace it in another company.

The company I am in will start growing again eventually but no doubt someone else would take my former job at that time. It is so depressing.

In this economy keep what you got, when it improves hopefully something better comes along.

Try not to concentrate on what you hate about the job, but concentrate on what you like

Half of something is better than all of nothing. You are working for a paycheck for yourself and family, not for fun. It is great if you have a job you love as I once did. I call that true retirement, but 12 years ago, I was cut as the whole department was. 34 faithful years, and not even a painted gold watch. 'Hub

            This is a hard one.

DH lost his job last Wed.
I have not worked since Sept.
We have 5 children to support.
Thankfully we resolved ourselves a few months ago that BK was necessary.

The hard part....there were lots of changes at DH's work over the last year. He truly did not like his job and was really stuck. There was no room to grow and the economy was really hitting the business hard.

So I can see your dilema clearly.
It is a very personal decision to make....the choice of financial security or living/working happily.

the choice of financial security or living/working happily

This is not the choice in today's job market. This is the same thing.

The choice of financial security and living/working happily OR no job, no food for family! As one poster said, try to find something to be happy about until you can change jobs.

Hang onto your job. Do your best to go into the new position with an attitude of being excited to learn new things, challenging yourself to do well even in work you don't care for, being grateful to remain employed and employable. Be creative about making yourself comfortable in the new position.

Our economy will not be like this forever. You will not feel this way forever. (I have to keep telling myself that too.)

Yep, keep that job, keep your eyes open for other employment and go for it if the situation arises. You never know when an opportunity is going to "pop up".

I just lost my job and got a better one a couple days later, you just never know. I was shocked!

Maybe this new position is going to give you a new perspective on things and change your life in a positive way.

Look for some kind of positive reason for the change and use it to your advantage, whether it is networking or moving in a different direction than your previous position that you never realized you were interested in.

Just keep that moolah coming in until you can find solid and better circumstances for employment.

It has been said, and it always has worked for us, EVERY TIME, that when one door has been shut upon you, God has opened a better door for you. Remember, you are not the first person to experience this situation. "There is nothing new under the sun". We will all be fine. Your only enemy is lack of faith. Fight that. 'Hub

Very true Hub, except I always say that when one door closes behind you.... only YOU have the power to open the next one. Don't hang out and wait for someone else to do it.

Clap, Clap, Clap, on that one. God helps those who help themselves. I agree very much. The more you work, the luckier you get. When unemployed, you have another full time job; looking for a new job.

Reminds be of a joke: Guy on roof in flood, boat comes, he sent it away, copter comes he sent it away, always stating I don't need you, God is going to save me. When he was drowning, his last breath was God I waited where are you? God say, I sent you a boat, i sent you a copter, it was up to you to take the opportunity. (not verbatum) 'Hub

Yeah, and -- more importantly -- He helps those who cannot help themselves.

(I always wonder about what that made-up quote is supposed to mean, exactly.)

My adult son has not worked in about seven months. He was so desperate to just take anything for the past few weeks he has been working a crazy 24/7 on call job where he delivers fuel or changes people's tires (general care trouble help). They literally call him all hours of the day and night. At first he loved it, he hadn't worked for so long. Now the constant calls are starting to get to him and the kicker, they have not paid him (he is considered an independent contractor and they mail him his checks) in two weeks now. He is fit to be tied. Try working a job you hate AND not getting paid. This is a crazy economy. The worst part is that at one point he was working 3, yes 3 jobs and he quit 2 and was let go of one. Sigh.
