Seeing a lawyer for the very first time in your life is kind of nerve wrecking. I think I survived just fine. He determined that I have to go the chapter 13 route just because my income is too high for a chapter 7. That's kind of a bummer. As long as it keeps the lawsuits by my creditors away, though, that's fine by me (and as I stated before I still think I should pay back as much as I can).
The fee he is charging ($3800) was quite a shock as well. He doesn't give me the option to roll some of it into the chapter 13 and needs the full amount before he will file the case. That means another 4-5 months of sitting this thing out and this time the token money I was sending to the banks will now go into his pockets instead.
Well, lots of paperwork to fill out. I'll be back with questions on the chapter 13 board.
Anybody else filing in NYC? How does the fee compare? I don't feel like shopping around for a lawyer so I hired him right then. Leap of faith!
