Why are you worried that you will lose friends? YOu don't have to tell anyone. With the economy the way it is many people are tightening their belts. This is the hardest part, accepting that you need help to get your financial situation stabilized, this could be an opportunity to get a fresh start! This is a humbling experience, no doubt, I admit I was proud of all the things I owned, but have come to realize that I didn't even own any of thoes things to begin with. What has brought you to the point of bk? Your not an AIG employee that had to return his bonus are you? just kiddin! When I was deciding to file I thought I was going to lose everything I had, turns out the opposite is true, I now know that I would have lost everything if I had continued the way we were going. I will keep my home, my cars, my pride! Find a good lawyer and go over the specifics of your situation with him, it probably will not be as bad as you think!

All we are losing is a lot of bills.

I think a lot of people will be proud of you for being brave enough to confront your challenges and do the right thing.

Look at these corporate banking oligarchs sucking at the public teat for billions upon billions of dollars. It's disgraceful, and I suspect a lot more people wish they had the cojones to quit paying these leeches.

I didn't discuss my BK with friends, but the gradual lifestyle changes as the filing date grew near and afterwards were indicators that something was up, of course. Again, it depends on the spin you give it. I used humor. For instance, when taking burgers to grill at the neighbors instead of steaks we might have taken a couple of years ago, we told them we were giving up "that bourgeois champagne and caviar lifestyle and getting back to our roots". Another time, while wandering at the state fair with friends, we came across a booth selling custom doormats and we chose our favorites - I picked the one that said "COME BACK WITH A WARRANT".

They understand, they accept, they laugh with us and don't ask questions. If I had "friends" who drilled for details, I'd avoid them.
