chase calling family members

Chase called my brother tonight and told them we owed them $19k and wanted to know how to contact me. I called them two weeks ago and informed them that we are filing bankruptcy and gave them our attorney's name and phone number. I know we do not have a stay yet because we have not filed yet but can they tell people how much we owe them?

I don't know they must have gotten it out of the phone book. They initially left a message on their voicemail saying it was regarding their account and the over due balance of $19k, but gave them our address and told them to call. His brother freaked out and called us accusing us of taking out a credit card in is wife's name. His wife called Chase and that is when they realized "they had made a mistake". They were not looking for his wife, they were looking for my husband!

not necessarily as bad as u think...chances are they may be in the same boat, just not talking about it.

go over their place and tell them hoe great u felt since talking to a BK lawyer....they just might become envious...

I totally get the sincerity of your comment and you would hope that family would react that way. but not this loser! We don't have any contact with him because he is such a jerk. He called us and another family member accusing us of taking out a credit card in his name before he called them back to find out why they were calling him! I wouldn't wish this nightmare we are living on my worst enemy but him... I know that sounds harsh and bitter but believe me he is the most self centered pompus person I know. He is constantly bragging about how much he makes (which is less than what we normally make, by the way!) He wants mom in a nursing home and everyone else wants her to go home. He says he is going to hire a lawyer to fight us on it because he "has enough money to buy and sell every one of us". Yeah! this is the last person I want to know about my financial situation. I bet he will end up in bk one day, he owns a landscaping company and I imagine many will think of this as an unnecessary expense in this economy.

I'm sorry to hear Chase is being so difficult for you to deal with and about your brother's reaction. I can relate to the humiliation of creditors calling family members. My parents were being harassed daily by creditors, even when I was represented by an attorney (though not having filed BK), which is illegal, even though I don't live with them and the creditors have all my current contact information. My dad would treat them like telemarketers and ask what it was about and they would say "a personal business matter" and he would ask what that was and they couldn't tell him and so he would say he couldn't tell them anything either then and hang up. My mom would get stressed out and freak out and panic and end up very upset; she doesn't handle conflict well. The reason my parents know about our situation is because of all the creditors harassing them. I hope you get this all worked out.

eddiep, dont beat yourself up over this man!...ask yourself..."SO WHAT IF HE KNOWS?" ... that dont mean $hit...He's like a credit score...you cant feed him to your hungry kids.

He may be self-righteous, but at the end of the day, it's u, ur kids, ur peace of mind....so let it slide....relish on the day u r discharged, coz if you plan carefully, u will have money left over in acct (via exemptions) and still have a clean start with ZERO debt (assuming ch7)

Think of BK as a cleansing process, and wash away the debts & bad vibes...and u will sleep better at night like me...

Chase didn't do that but BOA did. When they called my dad they would ask for both me AND my mom to because we both have accounts with BOA to. They made it sound like we were responsible for his debt as well even though we weren't on his accounts. It's just a scare tactic, they think if they tell family members or mention other people it will scare you into working with them. If they call your brother again I would have him set then straight or tell your attorney about it.
