What jobs become unavailable if you hav e BK on your credit?

My husband is putting out feelers in case he loses his job (they announced lay-offs, but he doesn't know who they'll affect or when).

He found a really great fit in a government job (about 10% pay cut though) and it says that instant disqualifications are (among others) a default on a student loan. It doesn't say anything about BK. Do you think he should be upfront with the recruiter or wait for them to find out when they do the background check and see that our credit is a disaster. Our filling is coming in Feb. 08.

    Thanks

If he is able to obtain the position prior to your filing, no BK will show on his record. However, after you file the BK could possibly be an issue depending on the position involved. Do a search on this forum - there are many postings regarding this issue. It is always best to be upfront with any job anytime a credit or background check is going to be run if you feel a BK filing could stand in the way of you possibly getting the position. If there is a good reason for filing; i.e., job loss with loss of income, divorce, major medical bills, bring it to a prospective employer's attention. What most employer's, especially in the financial field, look for is financial responsibility - many financial arena employers protect themselves by not hiring anyone with a bad credit background because they are afraid of possible losses by embezzlement, theft and the fraudulent creation of checks or accounts and legally they protect themselves. While most filers of course would not do that, there is the BK stigma associated with that and it just affects the entire class of filers. We all pay for those that have done that in the past.

I am not sure if it still applies, but I know a few that filed BK while they worked for the Department of Defense with me when I worked in US Civil Service and it had no impact on thier job.
Perhaps what you are hearing is an old wives's tale?

In the private sector probably jobs with banks, or any companies where you would have a sensitive money related job.
Don't think that any federal jobs go that route anymore given the fact that a known tax cheat is now Secretary of Treasury, and another tax cheat is about to become the Secretay of another govt. agency.

If you are looking for government position or even with the military, a bankruptcy will disqualify you if you are looking for a position that requires a TOP secret clearance.

That used to be true. It is not true any longer. We went through a Top secret/sensitive compartmentalized information background check with a single scope polygraph and as long as you are 100% honest and tell them everything you are fine. Hold nothing back because they will find out.

The guy doing the poly said once you file you are actually less of a risk than someone owing large debts...as they have the potential to be bribed.

Thanks for the info. I am not sure what level of security clearance he would be granted...we don't even know if he has or will get the job yet. There is a long hiring process...It is with the FBI.
