    Turbo Tax or H&R?

I normally use Turbo Tax to file my taxes because I had the same job for 5 years and it was simple.

In 2008,things got crazy and I lived in 3 states, employment in 2 states and self employed in one state. So when I go onto TurboTax to do my taxes it is all wrong due to them charging me the wrong state tax on my Texas employment even though Texas does not even have state tax.

Should I just go to H&R block? I am worried because I have always got a refund and feel like I may owe money since H&R does not look for the little deductions that turbotax does.

Are you using TurboTax Online, or are you using TurboTax Deluxe or TurboTax Premiere?

Because you have multi-state issues, I wouldn't trust it to anything less than TurboTax Deluxe. I have done multi-state (4 States) taxes as well as Stock Options, 1099-G and 1099 employment income, as well as Self Employment on Schedule C with TurboTax Premiere.

    The edition matters.

If you aren't sure about your skills in preparing taxes... always choose a tax preparer like H&R Block. It is going to cost you over $300, I'm sure, to have H&B Block prepare your taxes, but at least they will stand behind their work.

I've never seen TurboTax employment income taxes in a State (like Texas or Florida) that doesn't have such tax. There's something else afoot.

I am using the online Turbo Tax Home and Business. The problem I am having is one state I lived in has no state Tax. The second state does and I was self employed and did not pay taxes on my income so I should owe money but it has me getting a refund from that state....The third state is the state that they are taxing me on from my Texas employment. I have cleared it all and started over a couple of times and everytime it messes up.

When you did yours with Premier, did you have to do all states seperate or did you do them all at one time? It only gives me the option of putting 2 states that I lived in so I think that is where it is messing up.

I think Tim Geitner, Obama's Treasury Secretary appointee, would discourage you to use TurboTax. His lame excuse for not paying taxes for 3 years was that the TurboTax system did not warn him/prompt him to provide further further information.

Which is an outright lie. Any competent taxpayer knows what you can and can't claim. Anyone claiming to be a financial genius, knows to review his forms before sending them. And they want to confirm this guy as Treasury Secretary?

I have been using the online HRBlock for the past 3 years. What I really like about it is the fact that they will import any pertinent information from prior years into my current year. I also like that they store copies of the return right on the website. Recently I needed to provide tax returns to my loan guy and I was able to log into HRBlock.com, download the pdf and email it to the loan guy in less than 5 minutes. It is quite convienent.

I think you can go through the whole tax program, filling in all your stuff and not pay until you file. You might want to try that, it won't cost you anything for that "2nd opinion".

I did not know H&R had a online option. I really like doing them online for some reason. Thanks for the help

I use H&R. Turbotax just didn't cut it for me when it came to doing an incorporated business.

Does anyone know if its worth using a tax preparer as opposed to tax software in getting a better tax return? Just for straightforward tax return (no business or anything special like that). I'm just wondering if a tax preparer would have an advantage knowing more things related to bankruptcy that might help.

We have always used a 'tax man'. In reality, he is a CPA, but he really knows his stuff. I think we pay right around 125$.
The upside to that is, he knows what all that form mumbo jumbo means, he knows about our tax credits, stupid city tax, 2 states that we have to deal with...blah blah blah.

It is a realy load off us to give him all that stuff and say here! Call me when you're done

Well... it won't be the first idiot either voted into office... or given a position by a politician.

While this isn't as bad as a certain guy who use to train Arabian horses running FEMA... it's still bad.
