    Drivers License question

My husband and I have TX licenses. We have moved 2 times since June. First to Oklahoma for 4 months and then Kansas currently. We are filing in February. We have TX licenses still...I know-bad- but we have been so busy with everything.

Our lawyer wants us to get KS licenses before we file because it is against the law to not have them changed within 10 days of living here. It is going to cost us alot because we have to have out birth certificates and we do not have a copy so we have to order one online which is like 45 bucks each. And to top that off another 25 for license each. And we are moving back to Oklahoma after we file so we will just have to go through this all again....

Should we change them or just leave them as Texas? We are filing in Kansas.

    thanks

Must be the new RealID requirements. (Blame me, I design some of the DMV systems to deal with this "national" ID.)

Anyhow, yeah, you need the proof of citizenship whether birth certificate or passport.

As for your "keep Texas" question... that is a tough one. If you're moving in 30 days, back to where your key assets are, then you aren't domiciled in Kansas. Did you register to vote in Kansas?

I did not register to vote in Kansas. We are moving back to Oklahoma soon after filing so it seems a waste to me to pay for all the things I need to get the KS drivers license just to be able to file. But they will obviosuly know we have been here 91 days and their is a 10day rule.(if you move to KS you are supposed to change your license over) My lawyer acts like "just do it" but what he does not realize is we do not have 100 dollars to basically throw down the drain. It seems like such a waste since right after we get the KS license we will be going to Oklahoma to get the OK license for another 50.00 unless they can arrest us or fine us...then of course it is worth it.

Check the Kansas DMV website for what id's are acceptable. http://www.ksrevenue.org/dmvobtainingdl.htm. Unless you are military, I think you re going to have to get a KS license as if you driving around now with the TX licenses could could be cited if pulled over. (If military, 2 of the 3 addreses for - license, registration, insurance must match).

Yikes, your Birth Certificate is $45? Mine was only $7 when I ordered a copy.
          March 2009 - Filed Ch 13 April 2009 - 341 Meeting
          Sept 2009 - Confirmed April 2014 Plan completed May 2014 - Discharged!!

thanks! 45 Because of having to order it online and fast ship it(otherwise taked 4 weeks) It would be only 15 but since we are out of state it costs alot more. UGHHH more money down the drain lol

A SS card is not a valid form of ID. Does not contain anything about you except your name and the nine digits.

They ask for ID. I think I used my passport. I used a statement from the IRS for proof of SSN.

I didn't want to use my ID because the address, at the time, was wrong and in a different District.

No. Think airport. It must be a government issued ID card, because they are deposing your (technically) and they want to be sure you are who you say you are.

The SSN card is just to prove your SS number for tax purposes (and because it's the government you're dealing with)!

Way, way back -1970s/1980s Indiana's DL # used to be your SS # followed by two letters - your initials.
Think this has changed in the meantime. I moved to California in 1985.

Can you get someone that lives close to your birthplace to get it for you? USPS overnight is less than $30. A lot, but maybe some savings to you.

I used my Passport and a 2007 W2. Everything was fine. Do you have a Passport?

Are you sure you need a birth certificate if you have a valid license from another state? Have you called the Kansas DMV to see what they might accept in lieu of a BC? Sometimes they take other forms of proof.
