Which credit cards are good to keep through bk

Just wondering which credit cards (zero bal) have people had luck with keeping through bk without them cancelling you. I have a few store cards with zero balances that I am wondering if they won't cancel you after filing bk and perhaps help you get your credit on track faster. Gap, Macy's, Eddie Bauer, Pottery Barn, Nordstroms.....what about the Target card? Anyone have any luck with any cards like this?

Nope. I had a zero balance on Neiman Marcus for about 18 months (maybe even two years!) prior to the filing. Their letter to me canceling the card was in my mailbox within just a couple of days after the filing.

Most of the cc's have a service to monitor the BK filings and cross check with their customer base. They know when you have filed right away. The odds of actually retaining a card thru BK are very, very slim, especially in this credit market.

In this credit market, I have seen very few, if any credit cards survive a BK even when they have zero balance.

This is true. You will have to start from scratch rebuilding your credit.

If you do have a card that survives the BK (zero balance) and it stays open even for a while, they can still cancel it at any time. I had a Dress Barn card stay open all through my Chapter 13 Plan and did not use it for over a year and went to use use it a few weeks ago and it was closed. When I called Customer Service, they told me it was "due to the BK on my record." How about that for being ironic?! Open and used now and then for 6 years before getting cancelled due to BK. There is no guarantee as to zero balance cards...

I actually had a store card survive bk-Firestone. I just use it for oil changes. They do have no interest for 90 days on large purchases. At 21% interest, you don't want to run a balance.
But, I filed 3 years ago and then was then and now is now.

Relief; best thing that happened to you. We are all in the same boat and CC is one of the major reasons as well as lack of self control. I'm learning that at an old age. 'Hub

I don't understand how people are filing bk/considering bk and have credit cards with zero balances on them.

Did you ever have a credit card that you just didn't use for a while, maybe never cancelled out, never went to that store that much, etc., etc. and it is sitting in your drawer or wallet somewhere out of sight out of mind? That is usually the scenario for a credit card that may survive a bankruptcy filing since there is no balance and no debt owed so the creditor is not listed by the Trustee in the filing. There are also those folks that will pay off low balance cards in the months before filing hoping those cards will survive the BK if they have zero balance so they will have something to use after filing. Of course these folks usually are in for a rude awakening.

Why can one not understand having cards with zero balance and filing BK? We had 8 empty cards and 5 that were about 60-70% full. Available credit was maybe $25,000. Never missed a single payment or late on any card since obtaining them 15-20 years ago.

Lost job in July, stopped charging immediatly and stopped paying in October when money ran low. Now guess where I am?

                              Here! - in deep do-do...

By the way, all cards have been cancelled, thank you very much!
