I agree that a good attorney is worth his weight in gold. If you have a simple BK with no assets (car, house etc) then you can use a service to fill out your forms. If you are extremely talented like some of the pro se litigants here then you can do it yourself.
If you have a complex case, or a business, or anything that may disqualify you from a 7 (for example) - then you need the expertise of a good attorney. I never would have made it without my attorney and his equally talented paralegal. Having said that, not all attorney's are alike - you are hiring the attorney for his/her knowledge of the local rules too. And his/her knowledge of the reactions of the trustees.
I think that the attorney that was going to charge you $30/call is way off base - but then again he is free to charge what ever he wants. And you are free to choose someone else. At least his warning sign was early.
