How did you handle the collection calls after you filed Bk

I have to ask because i had one account sold to a collection agency and never answered one call until i filed. This agency would call once a week. So, one afternnon i answered the phone.

This person(in a loud, obnoxious voice) asks for me.I say yes this is him.Blah blah concering your account with xxxxx.I stop him from talking and mention that i filed bk.He was silent for a moment. He then tried to talk me out of filing, and asked if i ever considered settling the debt.No of course.Anyway i gave him my case # and hung up afterwards.

Just curious how all of you felt after you told ca's you filed?I felt pretty good after that call.
    Filed ch 7: 3-31-08 Pro-se
    341 meeting held:5-7-08
    Last day for objections: 6-8-08
    Discharged & closed....: 7-14-08

Simply, be polite and refer them to your lawyer. They will only want a phone number. If you have your docket number, give it to them. Please be polite at this time. 'Hub
If I knew it all, would I be here?? Hang in there = Retained attorney 8-06, Filed 12-28-07, Discharge 8-13-08, Finally CLOSED 11-3-09, 3-31-10 AP Dismissed, Informed by incompetent lawyer of CLOSED status, October 14, 2010.

I only had a couple of calls. I politely gave them my attorney phone number and bk case number. After that they never called again. Almost seemed TOO easy.
        Chapter 7 filed 10/21/2008

Took 115 days after 341 - But Finally DISCHARGED 3/25/09

I don't have as much experience as some here, but anyway, I am ignoring the calls. My ringer and call screening is off. I don't hear anything all day long when it comes to the phone. At the end of the day, I see 10 or so calls came in, and a message or two with someone saying, "Hello, hello" and hanging up.

IMHO, it is best to keep them guessing as to what you are doing, and stay as far off the radar as possible. I have already paid my attorney in full and am waiting for him to get all the paperwork together.

I have read too many posts from people saying that they told the creditors that they were filing BK, and the next thing they knew, they were in collections. To me, that will hurt my credit report more than it just saying "late." Of course, it saying "BK" won't exactly help either.

Now, "collections" may still happen to me by ignoring calls, but it's the best gameplan I can come up with from what I understand. I am only this past month being late on my accounts. I hope between now and my attorney filing, that nothing else happens but being "late." Fingers crossed, and knocking on wood.

Edit: Sorry, I see you asked about "after" filing. I am probably going to follow what I stated above until "after" the discharge/case closure. Then, I may answer the phone and say I filed BK and was discharged. At that point, I don't see any reason to ignore them.

The only negative I see to not answering their calls at home is that they may call you at work which could be embarassing. Macy's and Discover called me at work and after that I took all calls at home and advised of my filing. Once they were advised the phone quit ringing Just my .02

For the most part I never answered their calls for almost 2 years.

Then after I filed only one called me that I remember, the one that had sold it to various agencies and it had ended up in some lawyers hands. He seemed rather pleased to finally have me answer. He became less pleased after I mentioned I had retained a lawyer and we had filed bankruptcy. He was still very cordial, took the information down for case number, lawyer, district and chapter. Then said good day.

I think that's the only one that called and they called just a day or two after filing so they probably didn't know yet. Since that time no one has called.

I know I have several months left of not answering the phone. I just changed my carrier at home so I have that one unlisted now. But my poor cell is overloaded. They are calling me at work ant that sucks, since I'm afraid to answer my business phone now. I have a question (sorry if its been already answered). Since I have to wait awhile due to Bal Trans. is it better to have the account sold to a CA as far as objections go? I would think yes..but not sure. Havent been sold off on any of them yet. Only 90 days out

My home phone has been innundated with calls but that is no problem because I turned the ringer off. It was embarrassing one time when a girlfriend came over and asked me why my phone was ringing off the hook and that's when I decided to just turn off the phone. As far as calls at work go, I work at night when they're not allowed to call but have been told by some co-workers that I received some calls from various companies during the day when I'm not there. About the only thing I can complain about was when a collector called my brother who lives in another state several times. I got a hold of that collector and told him not to harrass my family or I would contact a lawyer about the violations. And since I didn't want anyone in my family to know about my financial situation, I told him it was from an overzealous finance company pertaining to a mortgage application.

I politely gave all callers my case # and attorney's contact info.

You can request verbally and in writing that collectors not contact you at work.
