They'll call less if you actually talk to them. You don't have to tell them anything much. If you are close to filing, tell them that. If you have retained an attorney give them that info. You don't have to answer any other questions.
It was very difficult for me to start talkng to the creditors at first but after the first few it was easy...much easier than dodging the mulitutde of calls and worrying about whether they were going to contact my family or friends.

Yeah, if you actually talk to them, they will back off to 1x per week.
I simply told them "I can't help you today." No matter what they said or asked, I can't help you today.
After a month, I pawned them off on our lawyer. We are hoping to hold them all off until we get our 08 taxes back and spent.

I hear ya--the phone calls were awful. I didn't answer them for months, but the phone calls kept up--sometimes 15 or more a day. When I finally retained a lawyer, I was able to give them her info and they all backed off. Now that some of my CC debts have been sold to collectors, they are starting to call again with offers to settle. I don't have the money to settle, and I am very close to filing--my lawyer will probably submit the paperwork next week--so I once again give them my lawyers information and answer their few questions--mostly just lawyers name, number, address and which chapter I will be filing.
They still try to offer settlements, and I let them know that I am currently unemployed, have lost my business, and do not have any money to settle. That tends to end the call.
Most have been polite, so I can't complain about that. I am just anxious to put this behind me and have the fresh start that the law allows for. I had such good credit for so many years, and now this--it is difficult to accept, but I decided, basically, in Feb that I needed to close the business and file, so I have had time to get used to the idea.

My home is with Citi Mortgage. Up until around May or so, we hadn't had any trouble with them. Despite the fact that we have never been late (beyond the grace period) in our 10 years of paying on our home, they started to bug us with phone calls wanting to know where their money was. Sometimes they would call as soon as the 5th.
We have always made our house payment within the 15 day grace period, and they never had a problem with it before. Suddenly they got nasty calling several times a week. For example, they would call on a Monday, and we would tell them when my husband was getting paid and that is when the check would be mailed. They would then call two or three days later wanting us pay them right then and there over the phone. We were nice at first, but we quickly lost our patience with them. We eventually stopped answering the phone when they called. It was clear that they didn't listen to a thing we had to say.
Since we filed, of course, they have stopped calling. I fully expect the harassment to restart once we are discharged. For the longest time I thought the grace period was done out of the kindness of their heart. LOL! I recently found out that the grace period is federal law. Now that I know that, perhaps I could use that bit of information when the calls start again come December.

Here's how I hand the calls.
I have found that if you answer and when they ask for you, just "yes this is so and so". Once they say who they are, just say "Thank You Mark, have a great day." Then hang up. They usually don't call back that day, not usually, anyway. I have 3 capital one cards, so I have them call me 3 times a day, once for each card.
It is less frustrating to me, to answer and be nice about it. Remember, the people on the other end are just doing their job. It might be the best job they can get. I can't think of any other reason a person would want that job. I would be one heck of a mess if I had to call all the people they do and be the receiving end of the unpleasantness.
