    what about this?

OK, I called a BK attorney for info and to set up an apppointment for consultation. I asked the receptionist what the fee for 7 & 13. She gave me the amounts without a problem. I called another attorney, asking the same thing and she told me the fee was on a sliding scale, depending on how much debt I had, what amount of work he had to do, etc., and they would be paid through the process. Is this customary? Is this what you'all have run into? I sure would hate to have them run up a big bill to be paid and me not aware of it.
I'm sooo bad at second guessing myself that I know I will obscess over my decision on who I will select, and will create more worry than I need to have in making this decision. Every little thing will be fraught with "is this the right person/ is this the wrong person to go with". Is the sliding scale thing something to even worry about???
Have any of you gone through this?

My atty told me his fee for a Chap. 7 was a flat $1500, plus $300 for the filing fee, so total of $1800. He did say that if anything came up that caused my case to require more paperwork, more meetings, etc. that it would cost more.

I only consulted with the atty I chose, but I got lucky because he's good. I know I should've consulted with a few before choosing but I didn't think of it at the time, only afterward.
        Filed Chapter 7: 8/13/08
        341 Meeting: 9/15/08
Last Day To File Objections: 11/14/08
        Discharged & Closed: 11/18/08

I know what you mean. We had a meeting last Tuesday with the BK Lawyer (Jed). That's all he does. He scolded me for a while, he couldn't understand how I spent so much money in just a few years. He told us 3200. I asked him can we do a 7 and he said he is not sure till he does the means test, because were right on the edge. He said the price is good for 30day. I told him it's gonna take longer than 30days to get 3200. He also wants to see our home equity loan & re-mortgage papers for some loop hole, what ever that means. So far we only went one lawyer, looking for another good BK-L. My wife still hasn't talked to me sense we left the meeting.

I was charged a bit more than a simple 7 because I have a small business. I was also told that should certain things come up (like a creditor contesting) there would be additional fees. Hasn't happened yet.

Even if the first lawyer quoted you a straight price, there are surely cicumstances in the fine print which could cost you more.

You need to stop worrying about what might happen and do what you need to do. You'll get stronger and stronger thoughout the process. Select the attorney that you feel most comfortable with.

              Good luck to you.

Wow. The last thing you need is some condescending lawyer who scolds you. That's not their job. I would not give anyone like that the tiniest of deposits and I would imagine that his practice is probably suffering from his manner.

However, he probably doesn't know it, because people like that seldom have a grip on how they are coming off to the real world and real people around them.

Hope you do find a great lawyer.

My attorney charged a flat fee of $1500 plus the filing fee for chapter 7. While trying to prepare myself for the possibility of being pushed into 13, I ask how much that was. His fee for 13 is $3000. My attorney did give me a list of additional fees for things that sometimes "come up".... additional paperwork and such. I don't remember what all was on there, but I do remember thinking the additional fees were reasonable if more work had to be done.

As for second guessing yourself. I completely understand. Since my husband works full-time I was 100% completely in charge of finding our attorney. He had more faith in me than I did in myself. I was so worried that I would pick a bad one and end up making our situation even worse. In the end, I did find a good one, so that worry was for nothing. I've had no complaints about him through this whole thing. The only thing that concerned me was that he cut it a little close at the 341, but all went well.

The one thing I can say about choosing the right attorney is that if it feels wrong, it probably is. Every part of my being was saying, "NO! NO! NO!" when I met with the first attorney on my list. When I met with the second bk attorney (and the one I ended up going with, I felt very comfortable talking to his aid and to the attorney himself. It just felt right.

                  Best of luck to you.

He told me 3200 for a 7 & 3200 for a 13, any additional would be paid by payments from the 13. Someone said they seen his name a lot on Pacer. That's why I decide to see him first.
