GC isn't open to the public yet. The only people that are using it were the ones that were invited to use it.

I have one and I love it. It's light on the standard VoIP features, and it also only works while your computer is on, but it's only $20 a year and has 911 service included. Even had voice mail service, though it's a little lame.
Something I didn't understand about MagicJack (I've seen the informercials and been to their website)... It requires the use of your broadband internet, but in order to have broadband internet, don't you need phone service?

We have AT&T and the internet service is wrapped into the phone package.

No. Broadband can also go across cable tv lines. I have MagicJack, and it uses my wireless internet, which I get through my cable company. The downside to MagicJack is that you actually plug the MagicJack router into your computer, and if your computer is turned off, your phone won't work. I don't use it as my main number though, so this works out fine for me.

Hahaa! You're funny! It has its ups and downs, depends what you need and your resources. My parents need to slim their budget drastically and have a store, so the computer is on all the time. I need to move around, so I needed other types of service

I was put-off too by the "invite" thing, but I requested an invite from the site, expecting a long wait, and got one 6 hours later.

"WorkingItOut" explained it well. The cool thing about MagicJack is that you can always just try it, without canceling your current phone service.

The quality of the calls seems to be dependent on the quality of your broadband (just like any other VoIP). And one of the drawbacks to MagicJack is that your computer has to be on in order for the phone to work.

There are people who have tied MJ directly into their router, and/or use a thin client (like a server, or a small dedicated computer, used only for the purposes of having phone service) to get around the "computer has to be on" restriction.

Another cool thing is that the device is portable, so if you travel and take your laptop with you, your phone goes with you.

Like all the other cool techie-stuff that's emerging, it all depends upon your individual needs, and your broadband quality.

MJ *does* have 911 service, but I'm not thrilled with it's call forwarding/voice mail options. If it would allow for delayed call forwarding (I have this now on my home phone, forwards after 4 rings or if the line is busy), I would gladly ditch my landline for MJ. But it's call forwarding is "all or nothing."

Their voice mail isn't customizable, which is another drawback. I'm hoping the developer will change these two "drawbacks" (IMO) in time. For now I use it as a second line. Since all calls are included for the yearly $20 fee, I use MJ before I'd make a long distance / toll call on my cell phone (since I have a very low minutes plan).

It all depends on what features are important to you, and your needs.
