Naw...don't be afraid! Instead, take heart and know that if the New Filers Curse hits you, you'll find the strength (or the craigslist $75 used dryer, in my case) to hit back.

I feel downright triumphant that my husband and I solved this problem without busting our budget. Wasn't that long ago that we would have just headed for the appliance store and whipped out the credit card.

I applaud all of you whose "curses" are way heavier than my silly clothes dryer. You inspire me!

I was trying to think if anything had happened.... No..... not even the hernia that 'Hub developed and can't pay the copays for. We have a truss, and so far so good.

At least that's what I thought until Thursday when we had the lightning strike. The surge took out the modem, two routers, a network card, and the mainboard of the server that has all our data on it. We DO have an off-site backup, but it is now about a week stale. So replacing all of this plus paying the cable company it's back due charges racks up to well over $300.00 that we don't have, plus a couple of NSF checks that have to be redeemed this week. Plus, as the month is ticking down to August, it is looking more like I am NOT going to get the FT time job I am praying for. I am 55, am very well qualified. But I know it has to be the age (I know that they're not supposed to look at age--Yeah Right!)

So when I got home Thursday night and found out about the lighhtning strike, I just totally LOST it. You know the straw that broke the camel's back..... Thursday night and all day Friday were very bad times for me. I'm doing better now, though.

One of my friends had a whole house lightning strike, for lack of a better term; everything electrical like tv's, computers, etc. were fried. It was a mess and I can imagine what y'all are going through. ((Hugs))

We had periodic lightning strikes when we lived in the country and on different occasions lost a tv, answering machine, computer and a telephone all at different times. Oh, and an alarm clock!! It was like we lived in lightning alley. We also had two trees fall on our house during so-called "straight line winds" and lost another couple of trees due to storms at different times. It was like living in wild weather country (central Texas--well, yes, we do have tornados). We don't live there anymore and I am somewhat glad (rural Texas is known for its crazy weather).

I haven't filed yet but I can just imagine what will happen when I do.

Well, I had to add our run down on this past week. Since I posted last, where shall I begin..............ok, first the power steering on the Jeep is leaking so bad we lose power steering, which I consider myself a strong women, but not that strong, we"re filling it about every other day, and let's see, Friday my A/C went out in my Kia, oh and my dog decided to eat my living room rug and we are having my family over next weekend for a family get together. And let's see, our picnic table umbrella broke, and again my family is coming over next week. But........... I refuse to let any of this get me down. What's the point, I figure it's just life. I'll find a rug someday when I can afford it, in the mean time, I'll just blame it on the dog, they'll understand. I went to Walmart and got a cheap umbrella clearance to $15, maybe the A/C in the Kia won't be too expensive, maybe just a couple cans of freon, and maybe the Jeep is a hose??

The hospitalization happened AFTER we filed, Liz. Any debts that are created after you file are yours to pay. A post-filing debt can't be included as a pre-filing debt because....well....the debt didn't exist before you filed. Good or bad - that's how bankruptcy works.

No notice whatsoever: I read a press release on the web before I even heard about it from my employer. Before Memorial Day I had a full-time, permanent job, albeit at a dismal rate of pay. I've been on a month-to-month extension ever since, continually expecting my next paycheck to be my last.

Well, about three weeks after we filed I took my car in for a routine oil change. It turns out I needed all new tires because they were bubbling. I HAD NEVER EVEN HEARD OF BUBBLING TIRES. And my husband's computer that he uses for work (independent musician) decided to die and he had recording sessions lined up that he had to cancel (lost income). Luckily we had money socked away since we haven't been paying a mortgage for the last 4 months but I'm afraid the trustee is going to look on our bank statement and see a purchase for a "new" computer (it's a refurbished one so we could get it for cheaper). God I will be glad when this is all over.

It seems almost all of us are faced with an emergency after filing. My car brakes went out and many others have had troubles too. I suppose it is one of those life's tests to see if we have really learned our lesson.

                        yes.
Everytime I am ready to file, I end up back in the hospital for something. I have been on the new filers curse for a long time & if it goes the way things have been going after I file, with this continuation of loss of wages I wont be getting much of a fresh start.

I hope the curse will pass now & can have thanks that it came just before filing instead of after.
                        *fingers crossed*

LOL! i think the whole globe must be cursed. Doesn't the adam & eve story punish the human race with a whole bunch of curses?

Bk is a blessing in disguise, then we get cursed again after filing. LOL!

Three days in the hospital with two CT scans and expensive IV antibiotics = $11,000 bill. Twelve DAYS after filing....I think that qualifies for 'filers' curse' status

Btw, our health insurance paid all but $1800, but we did have to find a way in a brand new Ch 13 plan to pay off the $1800 because it happened after we filed. Luckily our hospital was agreeable to a reasonable payment plan - we were lucky! We paid the debt off slowly over 15 months - so far, so good since.

That is what bothers me, lrprn. One good thing about mine is, all of my out of pocket & deductible (total 3,500) will go on the BK and if something happens in the first 8 months then I wont owe any money because the out of pocket is over with for this year.

In that sense I wont be cursed right after

I don't think this is actually a BK curse... I'm pretty sure this is what got us all here in the first place -- no reserve CASH funds.

We were all living paycheck-to-paycheck... and when something happened, those little high-interest plastic cards came in mighty handy. But before we could pay off the car repairs, the furnace died, or the kid got strep throat, or the roof leaked.

These are normal everyday occurrences for regular people. But they have a savings account for such things. We had predatory lenders.

So have bad things happened to me since filing? Of course they have... car repairs, refrigerator is dead (I'm using coolers for our food).

But bad things happened before BK -- my husband broke his back in a car accident, my house went through a flood and I lost my clothes dryer, water heater, furnace, and all my clothes -- and the basement has to be completely gutted, mold removed, etc. -- and FEMA came up with $738 for all of this.

The biggest mistake we made leading up to BK? Being optimistic. We've come to the realization that life sucks, and we have to be prepared for it.
