For me, it isn't every collector. It's collectors like the AMEX one who told me that I didn't deserve to be taking up space here and that I should go to jail, etc.... I ended up in a mental health facility a couple of days later. I was already depressed and he pushed me over the edge. I would have sued him for mental duress, pain and suffering, and loss of wages if I had recorded the call. People like him are the ones who are scum and who don't deserve to take up space on the earth. I have had encounters with some very nice collectors who were not like that. So, in order to attack you, I would need to know if you too used illegal, scummy, lowlife tactics.

Did you? If you did, that is wrong. People have problems that cause financial issues. It is one thing to call and ask for $$$$. It is another to suggest people should kill themselves or tell them things that are illegal. Luckily, I now see that BK is a perfectly moral and legal way out. I wish more people knew this.

Where are you getting that people think debt collectors are scum? I've never heard anyone here say that. I have heard them say certain ones are scum for tactics. That doesn't mean all are scum though.

I had the opposite experience. The one I actually called back before I decided to file was a monster. I found ignoring the calls was actually better. I did not get sued for two whole years and I had very high debt. Not talking to them helped keep me calm and made my life more pleasant. I just turned off the phone and went about my day.

No, i never used low life scummy tactics, whenever i got on the phone and i seen someone was truly upset, i would actually talk them down and tell them that things always have a way of working out and end the call on a good note, i know what its like to not be able to pay your bills and be stressing about it and i think they can sense i been there they are actually talking to me about things....believe me, alot of the collectors that call you for money that are nice have prob been down that road themselves.

one time i had a lady on the phone years ago who sounded really messed up on the phone and she told me she took a bunch of pills and was ending it all, i verified her address and immediately called 911 to get her help, there was no way i wasn't going to do something to help.

any person that would tell someone who is already going thru a very hard time in their life that they should just end it has some serious issues.

i get some very nasty people who scream and yell, and most of it doesnt bother me in the least, cause i know they are upset and all.

oh and in the credit and collection forum i read some remarks that sounded like all collectors were bad, so i just wanted to set the record straight
