    Security Clearances

Has anyone ever filed BK and been able to keep their clearance? I don't know why I didn't think of it before, but any insight would be appreciated. Thanks...KDC

I don't know, but we are told we need to inform the company if we are filing bankruptcy or for divorce. No one has said if that means we will loose the clearance. Mine is the lowest clearance though. I don't know if that would matter.

    It seems unfair to me.

Thank you, I will check with our FSO and HR.

My spouse is military and we were told that he would probably lose his.

Wow. That is not good. That changes everything. It hasn't been filed, so...I will have to talk to my FSO.

I spoke with the FSO and it probably won't be an issue. It may be monitored for a while, but he hasn't seen them terminate any ones clearance as of yet! That is good to know

I work in a government call center and I broke my news to the boss yesterday. He said that there were other people that filed as well, and I'd be fine as long as I didn't apply for a higher security clearance.

That was my biggest worry too - I was SO SCARED I would lose the best job I've ever had.

My husband did contract work at a major AFB several years ago and his security clearance was up for renewal a few years back so he could continue to have it if needed. They would not renew it due to our filing Chapter 13.

Sorry to hear that. Was he able to appeal? Mine was just issued, so the BK should be off before I have to renew.

I tried to read some things regarding ISSUES for being denied, seems you can appeal and present your case. It sad to me that some higher ups in DC don't pay taxes and they still work there, I'm juts a clerk and I am going to be put through the rake/ Just gonna pray and let God handle this one... can't change was is done.

I have a question about this too....my spouse is military and got security clearance a few years ago. I file bk myself. I am wondering if my filing will affect his clearance. He is in the reserves and probably won't deploy again for a while. But I am not sure!

I had a top secret clearance once. When I had the clearance there was no renewal, we were constantly being checked.

My husband is military and we were told as long as we were up front about it he would not lose his clearance. He self reported it to the security office the day we went and talked to a lawyer the first time. In fact, he has been receiving a lot of emails stating that due to the current state of the economy and the effects it has had on people, credit, bankruptcy, and foreclosure would no longer be factors to base the revocation of clearances on. They would now be looking at the total soldier package. Was the soldier bankrupt because of a gambling problem? Alcohol problem? etc. Was the soldier fiscally irresponsible and also in trouble for neglecting their children or some other reason?

I can tell you this much, at this juncture even if he lost his clearance it is something that has to be done. Things got bad when I was taking care of my terminally ill father and have just gotten worse since his passing. We let it go for a year robbing peter to pay paul, but managing to keep our payments on time. By last fall I realized our debt was compounding massively just to survive and we had absolutely nothing to show for it. I couldn't even manage to get a holiday retail job to help us stay afloat a couple more months, and I just couldn't lay awake at night worrying about how I was going to continue paying bills and keep my husband's credit scores up for his clearance.

Just so you guys know, it used to be, and I beleive still is illegal to discuss clearances at all (or even tell someone you have one) if you are in the military or work for the goverment.
                            Just a tip here.
