    funny ending to missing rebate

Someone had started a thread awhile ago that part of their refund was missing when they received it and I wanted to share what happened to mine.

I was supposed to get back $3,500 and like everyone else, was on pins and needles about keeping it. I checked one day and it said I would receive it May 20, then I checked a week later and it was saying "no information available." It DID show up May 20, but for only $1700. I had talked to my lawyer about something unrelated and she said that the trustees aren't able to get to the return, they can just demand it after. I checked with the student loan people and they said my account was fine. I don't have any unresolved tax issues, so I was anxiously awaiting the letter of explanation.

It came today and it said the problem was the IRS couldn't find proof that my son really belonged to me. I checked my return and sure enough, the accountant had inserted wrong numbers for the last four digits. (Guess the lack of sleep from trying to get all clients done by April 15 caught up to her!)

Anyway, I called the IRS and they straighted it out, and I'll be receiving my check in three weeks. I had to laugh at myself, all that worry over what ended up being an easy to fix typo. I got my disharge a week ago but apparently my brain is still trained for worse case scenarios!

Are you talking about the stimulus?

    $1800 for one child?

There is no way you are talking about the rebate, where 1 child equals 1800$. I have 2 and we didn't get that much on tax refund or rebate. LOL

I get the impression that the OP is talking about their tax refund, not the stimulus payment.

$1800 per child sure would have been nice! Too bad it's not true!

Sorry for the confusion. No, I was talking about my regular 2007 tax refund, not the stimulus. Since the accountant entered in the wrong social security number for my son they disallowed all deductions on my 1040 pertaining to a dependent, which cut my refund from the expected $3500 to $1700. Now that I proved to them to them he really does belong to me they are issuing another check. I just thought it was funny that I was projecting all sorts of scenarios where someone would take the refund because of my BK, and it turned out to be a clerical error. When we're under stress it is just so easy to jump to conclusions!
