    Renting after bankruptcy

We are discharged from our bankruptcy, ch7. We stillhave our house, and Countrywide did not reafirm. I just scored a new job. Its one heck of a promotion for me, and a $15k/year raise too! It comes with a relocation package and everything.

We will walk out of our current house. We are still current on our mortgage though. Housing here is not selling, so what better time to walk away. Besides, we are upside down in the mort. due to a 2nd mortgage.

We are flying up there this next week to look for a house to rent. There are plenty of nice ones that are 1500+ sq ft to rent and they are all $300/month cheaper than our current mortgage payment. perfect payment, and perfect size for us and our 2 kids.

What experiences have people had with renting after BK?

Here is an example application from one of the places that we will more than likely rent from. I've already spoken with this guy on the phone. http://www.mcnanna.com/online_applicaiton

Should I disclose the bk? or stay hush hush? (edit: I just read the contract, they pull a credit report. I'm worried now. Here I am making almost $80k/yr, and nothing to spend it on but a $400 car payment. Surely they will let us rent right?)

Its so scary to walk away from a place we own, but this job is going to be like starting over for us. The rent is $300/month cheaper than our current mortg. payment, and our new health insurance will be $220/month cheaper too. Its totally a win win situation for us. We've been praying so hard through this bk, and finally the man upstairs is helping out!

Congratulations on your promotion and pending relocation. Sounds exciting!

Many years ago I broke a rental lease when I moved out of state. The apartment complex reported it to the credit bureaus and also filed a judgment against me. So when I applied at a new rental place I offered them 2 months security deposit instead of just the 1 they were asking for. They agreed to that, I signed the lease, stayed there for a year and got my 2 months security deposit back when I left.

I'm sure you'll be able to work something out, so take heart and good luck.

be upfront about it, however do not disclose your plans for giving up the house....

You will find that some apt complexes with say "NO" if you have a bk, but then other's will just ask for an additional deposit. Ask the quetion before you even get to the application process.

good luck. It may be a little work, but you will get a place!!
