Even less understanding about the mental illnesses than the bankruptcy. I really wish I could learn to keep my mouth shut.

Right there with you -- people just don't get it. I have bipolar, ADD and OCPD, am in treatment for domestic violence (as an abuser) and will be filing for bankruptcy. I've had a surprising amount of support from people I know in real life, but there's also people that I simply Will.Not.Tell.

Own up to what you need to, don't tell people who don't need to know, and tell the rest to eff off. Nothing is wrong with filing for bankruptcy, that's a perfectly legit way to own up to past problems, a right given to you by the founders of this country -- they were smart enough to know that destroying your future to take care of your past makes things worse, not better.

I am also planning to file mid-may and the paralegal (haven't met with the atty. yet) advised us to go Ch. 7. I also have student loans, secured debt, close to the means test limit, and want to keep the house (like you ichb). What was the reasoning for the advice to go with Ch. 13? I hope we are doing the right thing to protect ourselves by filing Ch. 7.

reason for the 13

Because we can put the auto payments in the plan at a reduced rate and also because the student loans will be part of the payment plan. They still can't be discharged until paid but it'll be a great relief to us to have the payments being made automatically.

So in short because the way we will structure things it will allow us to pay more off and also have more money for stuff we need.

My sister filed BK in Oct. 1992 and was harrassed and put down by her husbands family big time, especially one uncle. Well when I started looking in to it in January and discovered PACER she was at my house and we looked up her last name and suprisingly he was on there 5 months after her.......he could put her down but apparently she gave him the idea!!!!
