    Bankruptcy and Frequent Flyer Miles

This may seem like a dumb question but with over 500,000 frequent flyer miles on an AMEX card what would happen to these miles when I file. This is the only card I pay off each month and the others keep growing.

I could probably cash them in before filing.

    Advice?

Don't think anything will happen to those miles. They are airline related - not credit card related.

This is an interesting question. I had some miles, not many. But I went ahead and got gifts with the points because I figured since they were attached to the credit cards, I should either use them or I'd be loosing them.

I wasn't going to call them and ask.

With that many miles I'd order myself a wonderful cruise.

cash them in for a gift card or something ASAP..they will go away as soon as you become past due!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This happened to me with AMEX. Luckily I had converted what I could to southwest points, but what was left over was frozen when I became past due and then zero'd out when I filed.

I would cash them in on soemthing I have a feeling they will take them! I took a flight for the weekend with mine and took one other round trip first class flight before I quit paying up!

At least get gift cards and sell them or something ebay has a good market for them
Converted to Chp 7 in July 341 AUG 3rd Went well!!!

Once you file, your card and all the benefits associated with it (including airline miles) go away. AmEx is notorious for being very bk-unfriendly. Since they will inactivate your card immediately when they are notified you filed, I can't imagine they would inactivate your card and still allow you to use bonus miles on it.

Before you file, convert your miles and any other card-related freebies to whatever your lawyer thinks will pass muster with your trustee.

I think we answered 2 questions which is great.

Looks like if the miles are at the airline they are probably safe but if they are still attached to the credit card they are in trouble.

Turns out I have miles at both places.

              Thank you for your info!
