I have been advised to file Bankruptcy, have some questions......

Hello, I have been advised to file bankruptcy by my fathers financial advisor here in AZ. I assume I'd be filing CH 7.

I currently owe approximately $25,000 on credit cards. I originally actually acquired credit cards to establish my credit and had no issues until I became unemployed. My lack of education has made it very difficult to acquire a position with the responsibility level I am capable of. Additionaly, lower responsibility positions are not being offered to me because of concern on the prospective employers part that I won't be satisified. I recently moved back into a guest room at my parents home to cut my living expenses so can go back to school to greatly improve my situation. I am currently unemployed and recieving unemployment insurance benefits and will be if needed for another couple of months.

My assets are minimal, I have one vehicle thats not worth very much and enough furnishings for a one bedroom apartment.

Upon having made some quick calls to attorneys offices I am concerned about being able to afford their fees. I have been given prices rangeing from $700 to $1200. My father was a public accountant for many years before retireing and he is inclined to think we could handle it with one of these Bankruptcy kits that are available. Especially since I basically have next to no assets and this is a strait forward credit card debt.

I'm concerned I may still need to see if I can locate a Bankruptcy Document Preparer to assist me here. If I can even do that by going around an attorney.

I am very anxious to get moving on this but realize I am seriously lacking in some knowledge so I am reluctant to get the ball rolling yet.

Should I acquire a credit report on myself initially?

What is the general process timelinewise.

    Any thoughts are very appreciated.

    What should my steps be?

For reference, I owe Sears, Bestbuy, B of A Visa, Citi Master Card, and Discover Card. I think thats it off the top of my head.

God Bless L357. I'm in a similar situation. I've found lots of information online using Google or other search engines for my questions: Pro's and con's, what to expect, life after, etc. I have found much lower attorney fees through advertisements posted in the back of local magazines, newspapers, local special interest publications, etc., even the classifieds. I prefer a professional if I can. They advertise too, just gotta find them. Might want to consider a paralegal rather than an attorney? I found one through a document preparation service. I believe you can obtain a credit report directly from the credit bureau websites. I'm learning the BK timeline myself, but thinking it's close to 90 days until complete discharge. I have not filed yet, busy learning. Very hesitant. Had great credit, and lost a job!

      Thanks

Well, I'm moving forward with my fathers help. We have been told my situation should be very simple. I have most of the forms to file, and will be meeting with an attorney that donates his time at the courthouse later this week to have him go over my first draft of the paperwork. Really, hopeing all goes well.

      Still investigating aswell.
